A previously posted poem working also as a prosetry piece of flash fiction exploring the question: We all have ways to use creation for healing the ills that plague us. Why do so few seek them out?

4 Am Ballet

Hot,
humid,
New York summer,
industrial commerce 24/7.

Textile scents of humid wool,
acerbic edge of chemical dyes,
permeating wood and air,
thick oily lubricants,
layered in basement enslavement,
shout forth to be heard.

Drawing on all he has…

The hard working dreamer,
of agile body,
holds forth,
awaiting his nightly concession,
his arabesque of glee,
the break.

2 AM

The precious pause for moonlight’s silver cast,
thrusting its presence through
the grime of floor to ceiling factory windows,
refracting off polished metal frames,
arcing visual life across paint-chipped radiators,
curling down over his labor station of stitch
seam,
baste,
and hem,
continuing across planked surface,
his rough hewn dance surface,
awaiting…

From floors below
dissonant seduction begins,
fabricating machines coming alive,
rhythmic noise,
production’s persistent chaos of movement,
changing its accelerated pace
into an allegro’s process,
returning to a scherzo finish,
all imaginative sounds
dismissed by others as noise,
even as he hears their musical magic.

Crescendo of background rumble
joins circular rises and falls,
creaking gears kissing,
turning belts lathering,
pistons rising,
falling,
pounding a velvet energy upward,
relaying creation’s echo
to his imagination waiting above.

Gracefully,
in slow motion,
he moves about the floor,
contorting his fluid body
like the bowed bristles of an artist’s brush,
bending life’s colors through pain
and its discovery of pleasure.

Break over…

Graveyard shifts drag on,
labor’s drudgery inflicting
the vapid body exhausted
by morning’s sunrise.

Squinting at daylight
yet infused by his Spartan workout
rendering fantasized dreams real
he forgets lifting rolled-bunting weight,
his aching arms of no-questions-asked effort
hanging limp beside legs of discovered steel,
now mere precarious stilts.

Still…

These gifts of support
beneath a sunrise-smile
lift him home with strides of exalted joy,
his weary bed ever-welcoming.

Very profound... In this there is vast motion and grace, buoyancy, heaviness and bolts of smells, sweat and wool. Your line breaks are great in giving meter and movement, but my favorite part is the contrast of harsh vs. gentle: thick oily/velvet energy, arabesque of glee/vapid body exhausted, graveyard shifts/morning's sunrise. I love how the last four lines finish with a twist of 'worth.' Very effective visual: "...his fluid body/like the bowed bristles of an artist’s brush/"

Excellent and descriptive story about the city that never sleeps and those transpiring overnight events that most of which the rest of us are ever aware of or didn't ever know existed.

Another memory unfolding into story. And how the movements of a textile factory are like ballet in their movements and precision. Did I catch that the wannabe dancer working in the factory is grateful for the break so that he can stretch and do so exercises before returning to the grind again.

For a time from junior high school through college, my mother worked at a shoe factory. When she came home at five, she had food on the table by five thirty so that she could clean up the dinner dishes in time to watch the 6 o'clock news.

For all she did, I've never known her to be exhausted except when it came to paying bills.

As the words parade across the page, one hears the delicate footsteps of the poets. Well worth reposting.

Excellent work, as always. I enjoy reading your thoughtful musings of art made poetry, words made art.
