     The Decision
A Short Story by Kathy Williams
They say war is hell. They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I say the heck with it all. From a female’s perspective, or my own perspective, war is stupid, and it’s just an excuse the male species has so they can go off somewhere and do what they really want to do, shoot at people.

I guess every one has to make decisions. Some have to make hard decisions. And people who make decisions, which is all of us, make decisions we will have to live with for the rest of our lives. I always say two seconds of anger is not worth ten years of a person’s life. That’s a long time to sit and beat yourself up about a two second decision. I have had a long time to think about this, and it held true early in my life, and it holds true today. You have to think about trade offs. What am I giving up to do this thing that thing or the other thing. Ten years of your life in a trade off doesn’t make sense to me. Best to think of other, better things to do.

I guess that’s why I keep to myself. I saw enough. I don’t know if I was just not living on the bright side of life or what, but everyone in my adult life was either talking trouble or spelling the word trouble, and, I can’t tolerate trouble. I call troublesome people toxic people. They are stifling and you feel you have to get away from them before you suffocate.

My mom would suffocate you, she held you so close. But I understood it. I had way too many brushes with death for her comfort. If the car brakes weren’t going out on every car they got, something else troubling was happening. So I didn’t know if the psychology caused people to overreact and start inflicting harm, or if there was some other sinister reason.

I have always called myself road kill. I used to walk around saying the oh no Mr. Bill line from Saturday Night Live TV. I guess you had to be there.

Having a sense of humor through a lot of things helps. Sometimes you feel if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. So you laugh.

I’m not particularly impressed with egotistical people who talk about you behind your back and eavesdrop on you and get mad when they never hear you say anything favorable about them, yet they are the same people you see everyday showing out or showing their you know what. I know it works in their favor to get favorable reviews. But what about you? Their getting favorable reviews is not going to change anything in your life. You will still be you with the same you and your life problems. Words are only words. Reviews are only words. Its just an old tactic some people use who have found that it works for them.

I’m not one for pulling people out of bad situations. I don’t think life works like that. If people are accountable for something, they are going to have to account.

I’ve heard of nonsense things like some people thinking life gave them golden tickets, etc. I don’t see how.

I guess the most iresome thing to me about some people is their complete feeling of disregard for other people. I know we are all different with different backgrounds, but I get tired of hearing how stupid I am, or what a loser dad was because he didn’t finish high school and since he didn’t have a brain, he thought he would earn his keep going somewhere and fighting. But, because he had earned a pretty wage, he didn’t deserve to keep it, because, after all, he was just some kid who dropped out of high school and didn’t deserve anything good in life to happen.

See, you have to apply yourself, get good marks, obey all curfews, abstain from s-e-x until marriage, etc., in order to be successful in life. Or at life in some people’s worlds. I don’t knock other peoples’ upbringing and beliefs. Scientists have done enough research to know about these things and some sociologists believe half the people walking the streets should be in institutions and half the people who are institutionalized should be walking the streets. So, mumbo jumbo this reason this and this reason that don’t cut it with me. I guess I’m fact-driven.

People who talk street language always want people to back up their standing in areas like in the community so they I guess will know what could happen to them if they pester them or bother them for whatever reason. To be bullyish or whatever. I can’t back it up. So, I guess I am field day mess around material. I guess I have just learned to fend for myself and protect myself. I guess females look like an easy mark. Maybe they are, maybe they’re not. I’m not a violent person and I don’t advocate violence, but I haven’t seen a bullet yet that can’t pierce it’s way through any amount of muscle tissue. So its insane to me for males to feel they can flex a few muscles and make girls feel antagonized.

I guess I am so disappointed with the black male population because they can never do back up in my world. I’m not antagonistic nor bullyish, I just look for ways to get these types of people off my back. It seems they get relentless and don’t think they are ever going to stop picking on people and bullying and antagonizing them. Make the misstep of getting angry at them and its the end of the world as you know it. I’ve never seen anything like it.

So, when they get out in the world saying this and saying that and who not this and who not that, etc., I notice that I am not looking at a credible person, and so they are dismissed in my mind as anyone to seriously take serious. They not talking about anything, hence, as they would say of me, they aren’t anything.

Because they live in a world where a lie will get you over, I don’t live in that world, I don’t come from that world, so I don’t believe it. I believe a lie will ransak your credibility.

I know a lot of people are out there looking for a fool and will get mad with people when they won’t play the fool around them. I can’t do anything about an ego like that. So I don’t try to do anything about it. At best, if I get angry, I yell and scream. I don’t do it in public, it doesn’t look nice, and they have public disorderly laws where I live which some people love to manipulate. What do I think about a person who knows that if they can get you to blow your top in public they can call the law on you and have you arrested for something they initiated you into doing in the first place? Do they purposely want to put first responders in harm’s way? Sometimes people in the store behind counters cause the problems. Sometimes I think enterprising people will get in on the act if they think it will serve their purpose, but, I don’t see why all that hullabaloo is necessary. I found that sometimes the news is fake so I can’t vouch for the validity of any news stories but when you get angry females running in the stores with knives and the clerk who pissed her off calls for help, then the first responder got to be fighting with a female to take a knife out of her hand that don’t make any sense to me. I know people have enemies, but people don’t make sense, especially when they see a girl they have labelled as a flop house floozie behind her back and she doesn’t know but everywhere she goes someone is showing out on her and not telling her why she more than likely will get angry and explode in a fit of anger and “no one” knew it could happen nor how it could happen.

Then you seem to have some people who figger it’s just logical to put all their political enemies in jail. I guess that way, after they did anything they did to them for whatever reason, that person can’t do anything about it. That’s some people’s logic and these things make perfect sense to them.

What did I have to do? Being miss nobody from nowhere, I guess I learned the underbelly of a city. Some of the reasons why I think some things that don’t make sense to me happen, etc. I always know there’s a method to any madness, a reason why people do anything that seems unorthodox. Since no one is given any explanations, or explanations that don’t sound like gibberish, or crackpot information, or are not relatable to their upbringing, faith or family values, then, it all goes as, “whatever, it must be the way some people float their boats.”

My insensitivity to the negro males species increases when I see things like a full blown war like the Vietnam war going on and some black guy is standing here safe and dry holding a protest sign which, he able bodied, can walk since he standing on the side of the street, what’s he doing being here and not overseas in the war?

Then he got to lead the protest when the soldiers get back by calling them all names. Baby killers, etc. So I’m thinking, do I want to go war? I’m not going to know who to kill or nothing like that. To show sensitivity to any able bodied black male on the street I’ma have to let a barrage of children someone would send in on me with hand grenades blow up me and my men. Hmmmm, me and my men or the kids the enemy, who obviously didn’t care or they wouldn’t have put grenades in their hands, the children or me and my men? I’ma go with my men. I would rather save them than the enemy, no matter how dirty they get with their little tactics. Then I come home to a barrage of people yelling and screaming at me about a decision I made in a war situation that they didn’t like.

So, maybe I don’t want to go to war no more. I don’t know what decisions to make. Clearly my soldiers wasn’t worth all that, half of em dropped out of high school anyway, didn’t get good marks, was probably in detention all the time. They didn’t deserve all that, to get spared from enemy tactics. Then want to run them to the guillotine once they get here. Off her head!
