The Huge, Huge Box
I live in a box. The top is so high I can't reach it. I can run to all four sides equally. I just can't reach the top. I have no furniture so I can't climb on anything. I sleep at the bottom of the box. I don't know how long I've lived here. As long as I can remember. My parents left me here long, long ago at the orders of the King Wizard. The King Wizard rules the land and decides what everyone is going to do.
Everyone fears the King Wizard for his powers are great.
Back to me in the box. I long for my freedom. A chance to see the stars at night. A chance to see bright daylight. If I were a bird I could fly away. Alas. I'm not a bird. I'm just a poor, poor girl stuck in a box.
I spend my days daydreaming. A handsome prince is in love with me, or I'm the queen of the castle. I order the servants around. They are at my bec and call. They attend to my every whim. I have but to sigh, and someone is there at my command.
Sometimes I dream that I am wicked, and that I have friends. I do mean things to them and play mean tricks on them. I humiliate them and have them beat up and locked away just because I feel like it.
Sometimes I'm the leader of the band, and I lead the band into unseemly areas and watch as inhumane things happen to them. I'm a clever band leader. I always convince them that their misfortune was all their fault, knowing all the time...
Sometimes I'm the "well-intended" friend telling people's parents about their promiscuity and improprieties, knowing their parents would go out of their minds.
Why am I so mean in these dreams? It's because I can't get out of this box. I just want out of this box.
But this is my fate. To live eternally in this infernal box.
