My first experience with a telescope was some kind of beginner's luck.
Now, before you get excited about this story, you must know that it is only an encounter of the first kind, and I don’t say close for a reason to be explained later.
I can’t remember if this happened before or after I lost my left pinky, but it happened during my brief stay in Pensacola, Florida before my father got stationed in Italy. I spent third grade there, so I was seven or eight at the time. [Read Pinkies are Expensive if you’d like to know how I lost it.]
We lived in a small cul-de-sac neighborhood, and I remember that it was evening, but still warm outside. The parents of my friend who lived across our cul-de-sac were visiting mine at our house. He had brought over his telescope, and I was really excited because I had never looked through one before.
He was looking through it first, and I honestly don’t remember what we talked about while he was, I guess looking for something cool to look at. It didn’t seem very long before he called me over to take a look. He seemed quite excited, but didn’t tell me what I was going to look at.
I assumed it was the moon, as it was in the direction of the telescope, but when I looked through, all I saw were stars. I was about to pull away when I noticed that two of them were moving rather fast, and in a very tight figure-eight pattern in which they alternated directions.
All of the other stars weren’t moving as expected, and I’m pretty sure we both jumped to the UFO conclusion — the kind with little green men flying spaceships. Knowing what I know now, I can’t refute that postulation, however, I am open to other suggestions or hypotheses.
I’m no expert, but I know of no celestial bodies that would act in the same manner. I’ve been told that the pattern might be distorted and that it’s just two objects orbiting a third, but this doesn’t explain the speed with which they moved, passing each other every half second or so. If they were celestial bodies far enough away to look like stars, then we shouldn’t have been able to perceive their movement.
I remember we both rushed inside to tell our parents that we saw UFOs, but they all scoffed at us and brushed us off, as though we were exaggerating what we had seen. I was so disappointed. We made no exaggerations. I didn’t know my step-mother very well at that point, but it was the first major let down of many. We were both very disheartened.
I know that we both went back outside, but I can’t remember if we were able to see them again or not. I do still think that they were genuine UFOs, and since they were in space, I don’t think that they fall into the UAP category. I can only assume they have some newer terminology for phenomena that occurs in space.
In conclusion, I know what my friend and I saw, and I’ve never seen anything like it since. Not even in all of the UFO footage I’ve seen. Faked or not, I’ve seen quite a bit.
Now with the disclosure happening, I feel more comfortable telling this story to a broader audience. I’m really curious to know if anyone has ever seen anything like this, or maybe has a plausible explanation.
Thank you so much for reading. Please consider leaving some feedback. Have a wonderful day....[[|:-)
Thanks for your experience. Mine was similar. The figure 8 pattern made it rather amazing. Also, because you saw it in a telescope, making it perhaps very far away.
When we were in high school in 1957, it was summer time and my twin brother and I had a friend over. Summer evenings in Wisconsin are very nice and we were outside talking in the driveway just after the sun set but it was still quite light out.
One of us noticed a light in the west that appeared to be moving from side to side, back and forth. It was like an airplane with lights, because the object would have been back lit by the sun and would need to have lights, but the going back-and-forth wasn't consistent with a plane moving in one direction. This was largely before there were many jet planes in our part of central Wisconsin. The object appeared to be moving very fast at some great distance away. Finally, after it made the several maneuvers back-and-forth it took off straight up at a very high acceleration rate and disappeared.
We can only say we had seen a totally "unidentified" object; Not a spaceship or alien presence. But recently, high-altitude observation has discovered two or three different kinds of new lightning never known before.
Another friend of ours, all three of us, wanted to be an astrophysicist. In his sophomore year of high school, he put a telescope with a camera inside a cardboard box with a lightbulb to ward off the below zero temperatures on the winter night that he photographed Sputnik flying over. His photo was in all the state papers including the Milwaukee Journal. He went on to college under ROTC and after seven semesters on the Dean's list in mechanical engineering finished his degree in photography.
Out of college he joined the Air Force for 20 years. His first assignments were to photograph objects orbiting the earth. Later, he set up photography sites all over the world to do the same. Finally, he was assigned to lead a group of earth, air, and space observers for the Air Force for number of years. During that time he was able to answer the red phone and ward off nuclear war at least twice by proving that missiles had not been launched towards the United States--only a rumor or bad intelligence.
With his help I wrote On the Brink of WW III and posted it here.
Later, he worked on the Air Force shuttle project that was secret. When I asked him to speak to the West Virginia chapter of the World Future Society on UFOs in 1977, he declined. He considers UFOs to be largely fiction. His group had identified almost everything in their view and he didn't say or not whether some were identified. But that recent release of documents may have come from his work.
He wrote his autobiography, Watching from the Edge of Infinity, over 20 years ago and I edited it. Unfortunately, even though his daughter has urged him to, he never published the book. He has sent me photographs of Pluto and distant galaxies from his retirement home in Colorado and his own personal 16 inch telescope.
Interesting! I’ve never seen anything like it, but then again my viewing stars is done without a telescope. Last year when I took the kids to go trick or treat on Halloween we saw a shooting star. Made me feel as excited as a kid on Christmas eve. 😊
