Word for today: Heebie-Jeebies

[ hee-bee-jee-beez ]

noun (used with a plural verb). Slang.

The heebie-jeebies. A condition of extreme nervousness caused by fear, worry, strain, etc.; the jitters; the willies: Just thinking about ghosts gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Some words are a lot more fun than others. The heebie-jeebies is/are fun to say, interesting to hear, and are appropriate when all other options won’t work. But even the heebie-jeebies can get on my nerves, especially when I can’t find the source. Consider this…

I like my lanai. It’s large enough to handle most of my needs: it’s breezy with screens on 3 sides; it has a TV, a PC, a heavy duty workout bag (so don’t mess with me); and a couch (for sleeping, not for more strenuous activities), and a lot of junk. And I’m about 10 steps away from a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Usually the latter.

About a week ago, I heard a strange sound whilst (that’s a British term) exercising my fingers (using my PC keyboard). After a few seconds, I realized that an intruder had breached my space, and it was repeating a weird sound. It had a weak voice, so I could probably win a fist-fight with it. But it was warning me about something. It kept repeating “heebie-jeebies.” Say what? “Heebie-jeebies.” I started laughing. After a few seconds, I wanted to know the source. Almost certainly, it was coming from a bird. But I could not find him or her.

Somewhere around 82,443 heebies later, I wanted to silence this feathery tree-warbler. Actually, I don’t have any trees near my allotted space, and that is probably why it is my allotted space. But he was back again today, squeaking out his dreary tune.

I cannot write with the TV sound on, so my mute button gets a regular workout. The heebies come right through cheap headsets like the Russian army in full retreat. But the heebies make my fingers turn blue, my head shrinks, and other body parts slow down to a limp, while the urge to kill comes alive. But I cannot shoot, swat or maim that which I can only hear. Perhaps I can scare this bird with a caustic word? Yeah, that should do the trick. Nothing can withstand the power of the pen...

Ode to a Noisy Bird

He comes and goes without sight

He who cannot sing while in flight

But next time he lands near my place

I’ll kick sand in his face

And knock his ass out of sight.

Or something like that.

On the contrary, I enjoy the chirping serenades outside my office window, be they melodic or raucous.

A likely story, one with a good laugh. I wonder where the "whilst" came from? Are you secretly British? I've read you write it before. I didn't think anybody knew what heebie-jeebies meant anymore. That was something of our youth. What with Halloween houses and 3D movies, I didn't think anybody got them anymore. Remember Audrey Hepburn opening the refrigerator door in Wait until Dark?

Coincidentally, while in a Zoom meeting last Saturday night with fellow authors, I started to hear an annoying bird chirping in the background. I just assumed that one of the authors had a caged bird (they like to talk about their cats) and didn't want to stop the discussion just for that, so I put up with it without saying a word to the others. We all had our mics open and could hear background sounds.

When I left the session, the chirping continued. I closed a number of open windows to find one with a parakeet happily talking to himself on a video that I don't recall ever opening up.

I hit the delete window button and the chirping was gone… Thank goodness!

I share your thoughts on the feathery friend, as I have a flock of the little devils that start their carnal tease at about the same time, 4 AM. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your preference, a black alley cat interrupted them Saturday morning and one would have thought the wings and claws of hell had erupted.

Heebies don't quite say it for me. More like high-pitched jackhammers going at it. But... gotta love Nature in all its manifestations, eh?

Love it, for although I love the singing of the birds it can become overmuch at times like when you're trying to sleep at four in the morning...
