Beginner's luck or fate its all the same for those who win the game
On a rainy evening with nothing to do and nowhere to go Mable asked her tour guide what sort of indoor entertainment activities there were around the city ,
He rattled off , a list of things like theatre , movies , live shows , dancing , karaoke , and as soon as the word karaoke was mentioned Mable was interested . She always enjoyed singing and asked if there was a karaoke bar anywhere near to the hotel tower . Dave rang the hotel reception and made an enquiry .
Then he hung up the phone and said ,
“Tonight there’s some karaoke in the casino not far from here “
Mable asked ,
“What’s a casino ?”
She asked .
“It’s a place with poker machines and card tables , roulette tables . Would you like to go there and have a look ?”
Dave asked and Mable responded .
“Sounds like an interesting place . So they have karaoke there as well “
Dave replied
“They have all kinds of karaoke rooms , old folkie karaoke , Jokie and okie dokie rooms , smokie karaoke rooms , croaky throat karaoke , blokey karaoke , there;s something for everyone there “
“Legs go then ,.’
Mable said
“They made their way to the casino and as Mable had never been inside a casino before they gave her some free credit to play any game she wanted .
She had no idea what to do but went over to the roulette table and watched them before exchanging her free credit token for some gambling chips that she put down on number 89 . The wheel was spun and the ball flicked around and around until it landed and the wheel came to a stop . Mable collected 35 times what her stake was and when she discovered how much she had won she was very excited .
She stood there and watched for a while , People gambled on odd number and even numbers , rows of numbers , adjacent numbers . single numbers and bets on colours either red or black . No one bet on a single number so again put some of her winnings on 35 because she had made 35 times her initial stake . The wheel was spun and the ball made its way around the wheel , skipping and rolling until it came to a stop . resting on number 35 .
The dealer called out ,
“Number 35 ?’
Mable screamed with delight . The dealer looked at Mable and said ,
“You won before on number 89 .Well-done Madame . Seems like it’s your lucky evening “
Once again Mable collected 35 times what she had gambled . Now some of the punters on the table were waiting to see what number Mable was going to choose next but instead she put all her winnings into her handbag and walked away from the table leaving them all disappointed /
“I’ve never seen such luck ,well Done Mable “
Dave said and Mable responded .
“Where is the karaoke happening Dave ?” .
He asked one of the staff who pointed him to a nearby bar . On the way to the karaoke bar Mable stopped to try her luck at one of the card tables .She had no idea what she was doing nut asked if she could join in the poker game . Dave stood behind her to guide her as the dealer dealt out each player five cards . Mable had been dealt out four ace and Dave nearly freaked out when he saw her hand .
He whispered to her to gamble everything she had won on this game .. Some of the other players folded when they saw the amount of money Mable had placed on the table . Only one of the other players remained in the game . When the dealer checked each hand, the other player had four Jacks and seemed very confident of scooping the pool until Mable revealed her four aces . There were many there who were shocked at the amount of money Mable had just won . Mable seemed oblivious to all the attention she was getting and just collected her winnings from the table ,
Dave was speechless and pointed her towards the karaoke bar where they stayed for an hour . Mable enjoyed herself singing all her favourite songs . After her voice was hoarse from singing Mable decided to call it a day and asked where she could cash in her chips . She was brought to the cashier by one of the staff . Mable handed over all of her winnings that netted her a small fortune . Before leaving the casino, the manager approached Mable and congratulated her for her good luck .
Mable was over the moon and thanked him for his well wishes and he asked her.
“What will you do with all that money ?”
‘Probably give it to Mr Locke who paid for my holiday in Switzerland “
She replied and the manager of the casino insisted that she would come back to the casino and give him a chance to get some of that money back again but Mable replied ,
“Sorry tonight’s my last night here . I’m returning home to where I come from tomorrow .
They call it beginners luck. Mabel had a lot of it and was wise to walk away with her money rather than gamble anymore.
Reminded me the time in January 1978 when I was in Manila and looking for a place to eat. There was an open door to the street at a Filipino restaurant. I've had my fill of Chinese and thought I would try it. The main room was filled with about 30 women and music was playing.
When I asked for a table, one of the women followed me and became my sole waitress. I never had that happen before or since. She was like Dave. And then, Young women would come up and grab a microphone and began singing. It was my first experience with karaoke.
Another time at a singles night in San Francisco. We were at a fake Casino night at the Fairmont hotel with just chips and no money. I watched a guy choose red in roulette, about 10 times in a row always putting all of his chips back on red each time. A crowd gathered. Eventually, he had enough chips to win the main prize, a week at Lake Tahoe. But he continue to go all in until he lost everything. I lost right away by playing single numbers. But it was fun.
Winning the most chips that night was sure to get you hooked up with one of the single women there.
