Never too late to learn and never too old to dream
when the world’s your oyster and the pearl is the possibilities you have in your grasp
Between running the boxing club and helping the orphanage it kept them busy during the day . It was difficult now to consider taking break . Even though a holiday was out of the question another possibility arose of evening college and further education .
Their ability to learn to read and write had made them smarter and as a result they had discovered an oyster in a big ocean of possibilities in their lives .
That oyster had left them to consider the pearl that could be within their grasp .
The wealth of knowledge opened up new horizons for them with a view to expanding what they had learned already to move on with further studies at college .
The new goal they set was in master building and achieving tradesman qualifications to set themselves up in the building game .
In their minds they built a ship
to venture out into a new world that offered work and good money to build new homes and even renovations to older homes .
Now that they had taste of the oyster they wanted a part of the ocean as well .
Bo Bo and Charlie have rolled in evening college to pursue a Jack-Of-All-Trades license .
The pearl in this venture into academia was to secure a university degree . The two lads were excited about finding that pearl so they could fill their pockets with wisdom
and become successful business men .
During their first year of learning to be even smarter than they ever imagined they had to do some practical work on site as well
as theory at evening college .
So with their dreams of becoming rich in their Jacks-Of-All-Trades careers they were on a pathway of no return .
Both of them had to find some one who would give them placement on a building site in order to complete the practical experience as well as passing the required assessments they needed to obtain the credentials to manage all the tasks that were presented . Bo Bo and Charlie were lucky to get a start with a construction company that were building new homes in the Silverstream Estate in the city .
They managed to avoid friction and disputes that often occurred in the building game and took a wide berth when ever there were any fights or arguments on site .
They both pushed barrows of mud along narrow planks of wood and went up ladders with toolkits strapped to their belts as if they had done it all their lives .
They were motivated now to succeed .
Their were many things to be done working on the site at Silverstream . They felt part of a team and got on well with the tradesmen doing all of the things that needed to be done .
The hard work got harder and their studies more intense but both Bo Bo and Charlie stuck to the task Nd put up with the aches and pains over their bodies .
They did their best but after a few months they returned to the classroom at evening college with the desired results in the practical side to the course .
The teacher of the course was very understanding of everyone’s situation and told the two lads they had learnt one of their biggest lessons in life .
It’s not always about having knowledge it’s about the experience behind the knowledge that makes the difference .
He reminded the class that they really had to study hard with their written assessments to get the grades that would allow them to proceed to the next level of the course at university .
The lads said they would do their very best . Time went on and the lads studied hard . They still did their works at the boxing ,
and helped out at the orphanage .
The oyster they had found was becoming much brighter and happier in their lives . It gave them structure and strength in what them wanted to achieve as well as insight to the treasures that awaited in their future .
They had both been best friends since their early school days and even though they looked like two hard men they were actually more like two angels .
They still went to church and were learning latin because someone had told them that Latin was the language of scholars .
Bo Bon and Charlie had set their sights on becoming top graduates at university .
They thought that if they spoke Latin they would be accepted better by the other students .and Charlie thought speaking Latin would be a great asset
Bo Bo said
“ I don’t think it , I know it . If you want to be an academic and get better grades then we should both know Latin , you never know Charlie the world could be a bigger place for little oyster .“
Charlie looked very excited and said .
“Lets go Bo Bo out to that big world with our little oyster because I want us to have more possibilities “
They both studied hard and got well rewarded with top marks on their assignments .
With the passing of time they progressed in their course at evening college and they felt much more confident knowing that they didn’t have to speak Latin all the time in their class . They were accepted by the staff and students at Uni and were invited to write their story of their journey to graduation day.
Bo Bo looked at Charlie and smiled saying .
“We made it Charlie . Now with theses qualifications we can have the oyster and leave the rabbits to keep pushing barrows of mud uphill .“
Charlie laughed and said
“It sure is a dream come true all right Bo Bo . I’m chasing a different dream now that I have my eyes fixed on that oyster . “
The classrooms at University were much quieter now that the course had finished and most of the students who completed the course had already entered into the workforce but Charlie and Bo Bo had another plan .
The lads wrote about their experience at evening college describing the journey to graduation as a metaphor of finding an oyster in an ocean of possibilities and explained how then pearl within the oyster was the skills and knowledge they had gained in the process and how all of that would be able to give them a better and brighter future .
Both of the lads had worked hard and deserved their graduated success with all the trimmings .
The both looked the part in their gowns and cap and Bo Bo looked at Charlie with a sense of pride and satisfaction and said .
“There’s a place somewhere for us Charlie and the sky’s the limit now . “
With their pockets filled with dreams the two lads decided to look at emigrating to
Australia with that oyster they found .
Like a dream come true they set themselves a goal on a ticket of no return and after a few years in Australia they both had found a wife and soon after they had children of their own and as they often had said , they found their oyster in life .
Sometimes stars do fall and there are people who grab them and put them in their pockets .
Charlie and Bo Bo had made a good life for themselves in their new home
Your story tells a lesson. The world certainly is everyone's oyster. But in order to grab that pearl, education is the key.
For all my book learning all the way to computer technology and philosophy for my dissertation…so dense that many cannot read it, my greatest accomplishment was the design and building of a new home that was solar passive, set a wooded hillside, overlooking an 8 acre pond and joy to live in.
But like many good things, I had to let the pearl go and move to a less hospitable and beautiful environment of suburbia in order to make a living from the knowledge I had gained.
