The story of one of my main adult characters, Roberto Sormiento, in his words.
Roberto Sormiento is my name, and I am 26 years old. I have lived here in Tennessee since I was 18 years old, 8 years now. I lived in California before then; I moved to California when I was four years old, and spent most of my life there, as you can very well see.
I was born on July 4, 1976, in Dallas, Texas, to Ernesto and Maria Sormiento, and I was their only child. At birth, I was nearly 2' long and weighed over 8 pounds, according to Mami. I was a very active, happy child, and I was always healthy. I was hardly ever sick.
When I was four, I had my first memory. That was, we had seen Loretta Lynn in concert (my Mami loved country/western music, and Loretta Lynn happened to be her favorite singer), and during the show, Loretta Lynn had seen me; and she pulled me up onto the stage. She had me sing with her, and I was scared to DEATH! I then proceeded to fall off the stage, and I split my chin open. (I still have the scars on my chin, from where I got stitches; and I will always remember that time in my life as long as I live!)
Right after that, we moved to California (Los Angeles), and I loved it. I grew up near the beach, and every day I went swimming in the ocean, and I also learned to surfboard by the time I became a teenager. To me, there was nothing more exhilerating than "catching waves"! (To this day, I still love to surf.)
I lived in California until I was 17 1/2, and I moved to Tennessee; I guess I was looking for a change of environment; I don't know, but I soon found myself in Nashville. Right after that, I started attending medical school, as I wanted to become a nurse and help people in their time of need. At the age of 18, I got the job I am still at today, and I graduated from nursing school two years ago, when I was 23 1/2.
Today, 8 years later, I have a very successful nursing career, and I work as a nurse in the burn ward at Nashville Memorial Hospital here in Nashville. My work brings me much satisfaction in knowing that I am helping people overcome their injuries; and my work so happens to be where I met my future wife-to-be.
Yes, I am now married to the woman I met in the burn ward; and we have now been married for a total of nearly 5 years now. We also have since become parents; we have three beautiful children, two, of which, are twins. Our childrens' names are Jubaki Miguel (he will be 3 in June), Eshe Maria Ayala (our only daughter), and Kibarake Miguel Joseph (both are just a little over a month old; they were born on Valentine's Day of this year).
My wife's name is M'buti Ayala Moore-Sormiento, and she is a year younger than I am. She was born in Africa, in the country of Kenya, and she is as exotic as they come. She is 6'5" tall, and she is of the Maasai tribe. People often stare at us because she happens to be Black, and I am Hispanic; but that doesn't bother me any. As long as we love each other (and we DO), then what does it matter? It's not the color of our skin that counts; it's the love we have for each other in our hearts that is most important!! She is thin in build, and she has black hair that is cut very short on her perfectly-shaped head; and she has eyes the color of amber. She has a breathy, high-pitched voice I find very sexy, and she is quite emotional and shy in nature. She also happens to be physically handicapped. She walks on crutches or a walker (or uses a wheelchair) because she was burned on her legs, back, and buttocks, and then after she had healed from her burns, she then contracted necrotizing fasciitis, and she endured even more surgery to try to save her life; and it took a very long time for her to recover. She is still faced with ongoing health problems, and she gets frustrated because she wishes she can help out more, but is unable to. And she is unable to work. So she stays home and takes care of the children as best as she possibly can.
M'buti is the youngest of three in her family, and her two older brothers, Kiserian and Naiser, both still live in Africa, where they were born. Her parents are both dead; they were both murdered while she was in the hospital, recovering from her burns, and she still can't talk about it today without bursting into tears. It was a very rough time in her life, only one of many, it seems. She has certainly been through a lot, my little "'Buters". (That is my pet name for her--"'Buters"--, and she absolutely HATES it! She gets SO mad when I call her that!)
Some of my interests include: surfing, singing songs, playing my guitar (music is another love of mine; fact is, I used to be a leader of a rock band I called "The Burping Cheetahs", but our band has since broken up), being with my wife and family, and reading. I also love to get on the computer and go to the gym and work out several times a week. I also enjoy going to church when I can; I go to a charismatic Catholic church here in town. And here is another thing: I enjoy going to amusement parks to check out the roller coasters; and it seems that the wilder they are, the better I seem to like them! :)
People often say that I have a crazy, goofy personality. Maybe I do, but that's the way I have ALWAYS been! You gotta' be a LITTLE bit crazy to be able to survive in THIS world nowadays!
