The sequel to Part One. Ronee' had a stroke on her eighth birthday, and she is now lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and paralyzed. Her family visits her and tries to come to grips with her situation.
This incident happened on Christmas Day nearly 3 years ago.
Unfortunately, it IS true . Ronee' HAS suffered a stroke, and because of it, she now lies in a hospital bed, hooked up to tubes, and she is unconscious and is paralyzed on one side of her body.
We look at her, lying helpless and small in the bed, and we can't help but cry. What had started out as a very happy and exciting day for all of us has suddenly turned dark, and all of us are feeling scared and unsure of what will happen to Ronee', or whether she will emerge from the stroke a totally different child.
The Christmas decorations surrounding the bed seem inappropriate all of a sudden, and we suddenly don't want to see them. It only reminds us of this morning, when Ronee' was seemingly full of life and was smiling, especially when she got her accordion. She was so happy and joyful; now she was lying helpless and sick in a bed here at the hospital, and it didn't sseem to make much sense. How a child bursting with health could suddenly turn so sick was something beyond our understanding.
Mom was understandably upset and angry. "How could she suffer a STROKE, of all things?" she demanded of Dr. Emmons. "She is just a young child; she is only 8 years old! Eight-year-olds aren't supposed to have things like STROKES!"
Dr. Emmons calmly, but matter of factly, explained that young children can suffer strokes, but it was a rare thing when they did; and he felt that her stroke was caused by a sudden interruption in blood flow to her brain, and he felt that it was caused by the time when she was without oxygen during the time she had her asthma attack. He said that sometimes happened. He said that Ronee' was presently paralyzed on her one side, and that therapy could hopefully help her regain the use of her paralyzed limbs. He said that her face was droopy on the one side, and it would probably mean that she would have a crooked smile for a time. He didn't know whether it was permanent or not, but he did say that the stroke Ronee' had was relatively mild to moderate; he didn't feel that there would be significant damage; but he would know more when Ronee' woke up.
