I just want to thank you for everything you have done for me in the past week. I couldn’t have made it through this with out you supporting me.
Chapter 5
The service was beautiful. Several groups from church had sent flowers, as well as Robert’s employer. The minister preached a very comforting sermon. The graveside service was the hardest part. Having to leave Robert in that cold lonely grave was more than she could bear. Michelle and one of Robert’s friends had to help her to the car. Back at the apartment, Amy was inconsolable. She lay in bed, sobbing and wailing. Michelle was at the end of her rope, she tried everything, but Amy wouldn’t be comforted. The only thing that would comfort her would be Robert, but she knew he could never come back. Michelle dared to poke her head in the room again. “Is there anything you need? Can I help you somehow?” she asked hopefully. “No, not unless you can give me my husband back” was the weary reply from the bed. Michelle’s heart broke, hearing the despair in Amy’s voice. She longed with all of her being to be able to do something to comfort her. She knew that this was part of grief, but it was still wrenching to watch. Michelle wanted to badly to be able to somehow pull her friend out of this. Shutting the door quietly, she went back to the living room, sitting in Amy favorite spot, she looked out at the night sky, and began praying for Amy. “Lord, she is hurting terribly right now, and want to do something to help, but Amy won’t let me in. It is almost more than I can bear to watch her go through this. Please guide me to a way to help her. In your name, amen.” Feeling new sense of hope, Michelle got up to start dinner.
Nothing was going to pull her out of this was what Amy decided. Her life was over; the man that she loved was dead and buried. She didn’t see any reason to go on. Sobs, deep and painful exploded from her body. Her pillow was soaked through, but she didn’t have the energy or desire to get up and change it. Michelle had been trying her hardest to pull her out of this despair, but there was no way out. She felt bad for Michelle; she knew that by now, she was reaching the end of her rope, not being able to help. Her check ins had gotten less frequent, she came every hour or so, to make sure Amy didn’t need anything. Amy didn’t know what she would do without Michelle in her life. She was a beacon in this storm. Amy felt sleep claiming her again, and didn’t try to resist, she just gave in and sank into that black abyss. At least when she was asleep, she didn’t think of Robert and all she had lost in his death. In the next moment, she was standing at the end of a long hall, and Robert was at the other end. Amy started walking, seemingly in a trance. As she walked, Robert seemed to get farther from her. She reached the end of the hall, and Robert was standing just out of reach of Amy’s fingers. She reached out, but couldn’t reach. Robert was standing, seeming to float in nothingness, and if she fell, she didn’t know how far she would fall. Crying, she set down, it was hopeless. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get to Robert. Amy curled in a ball, and continued to weep. She awoke, sobbing, still curled in a small ball. Amy continued to sob, not realizing that was had just happened was only a dream. When Amy ventured out of the bedroom, late that night, Michelle was sitting in the living room reading a book and listening to a cd. There were several scented candles burning, casting shadows on the walls and filling the room with a wonderful aroma. Amy sat down across from Michelle. “I just want to thank you for everything you have done for me in the past week. I couldn’t have made it through this with out you supporting me. I plan to find a way to thank you somehow.” Michelle took Amy’s hand, and wiped a tear from her cheek. “I didn’t do anything that you wouldn’t have done for me, that is just what friends are for, they are there for each other.” Amy hugged her when she was finished. That night was much like old time, Michelle and Amy stayed up late that night, talking and reminiscing of their teenage days. “Do you remember that time we both dyed our hair blond and mine came out green and yours came out bright yellow? I asked laughing “Yeah,” Michelle said chuckling ”I thought my mom was going to kill me when she saw it” We both laughed when she said that. Amy stretched and yawned. “I think it is time for me to turn in, I am beat. ”She said as she climbed off the bed and headed for the door. “Good night, have good dreams tonight.” Michelle said as I headed to my room. “You too” she returned. She was barely in bed before sleep claimed her. No dreams came that night, and Amy was relieved when she woke up in the morning, she had slept through the night. Her stomach seemed to have calmed, so she tried a little toast and juice for breakfast. Michelle was gone to work, so Amy had the apartment to herself. After breakfast Amy decided to go for a jog. This time, she didn’t let her memories dictate her speed, or the length of the run. The park was beautiful and the weather cool, Amy decided to take her journal and have lunch outside.
She found a nice spot by the pond, and sat down to eat and write for a while. She had been neglecting her journal since Robert’s death; she was usually very faithful to write something in it each day. She took her time and wrote about all the recent event of her life. Amy thought it would be very emotional, that maybe she wasn’t ready for it yet, but she only had to wipe a few tears away before she was done.
