How I have had a relationship with someone overseas and several from across the United States and I have FINALLY figured out that the internet dating world is NOT the way to go!
The world has been changing IF you have not noticed. No more courting and asking of the father's permission for the daughter's hand in marriage. It seems like that only happens on t.v. now a days. I HOPE it still happens in some parts of the country today though.The world is filled with $700 dollar computers and the internet and dating online and joining a group of people who chat about a certain topic for long periods of time. Why?, because that is where society is today I would guess. Computers had just started coming out back in 1988 when I went to college and I am the BABY of the family! I just used the computers at the school though. Mom depended on that! We did NOT have the money for computers at home. Besides, they were JUST Coming out with them then and they cost around $2000-2500 dollars!!!!!!!! When Mom decided to go to Law School in Ft. Worth, Texas, we got a computer for her and payed around $2100 for it which included tax and warranty. So,I believe we got it for around $1600 dollars, and that was in July 1999! I met my very first internet guy on Mom's computer back then. His name was "Timothy". I later found out he was from Australia and got all depressed because we got along so very well. We continued to talk on Yahoo IM Messenger though. Eventually, I gave Timothy my phone number and he gave me his. Later, we exchanged actual physical addresses. We started sending presents back and forth to each other. Only ONCE have I received a postcard, out-of-the-blue from him and then, about 2-3 days ago, I received a PLASTIC flower from him. It was sweet because he enclosed a note and said, "Our love is like a plastic flower, It will never die". Well, you get an A+ for trying Timothy dear. Sorry, but the Sun came out and was 100 degrees and melted the flower!!!!!!!! We have conversed back and forth like this for 4 years and 3 months now. I officially ended it yesterday. One year we barely talked to each other. Timothy is in Australia and I am in Dallas,Texas. The distance is too great. He needs to spend his money on a nice girl at HOME in Sydney,Australia and I will find a guy or woman here in the States! I could go further into detail but choose not to at this time since Timothy is also on AD.Written Friday,October 3rd, 2003 12:10pm

I'm sorry to be only getting to ths now but I am sorry to hear about the flower and considerng we are still talking to each other on the phone and still in love with each other just as deeply I'd say that shows commitement would'nt You ?

LOL - I can relate! However, I married my husband after meeting him online, so it's not ALL bad! ;) Good luck to you - it's a tough market out there! I just lucked out... Fate, serendipity, whatever you want to call it....
I sometimes feel lucky I didn't get my first used computer until the year 2000, even as and hold wedded woman with two children, I felt its allure through the years. I was much more wary when I finally did get 'Puter', the Internet is a total scam, in some areas, a plethora of info. in others. Since I have been suspicious of friendly overtures since I was young, I did not fall for the crap on the WWW. A poignant story, Becca.
Well Becca, it is very difficult to trust anyone without seeing his/her in person. All it is are talks in the machine. You don't know who you can run into. Some of these are scoundrels who only wish to take advantage of you.
Never trust anyone too easily on the net. As you say, find someone close to home. That's the only way love can blossom.
