Liner Notes to “The Marriage Myth”
I have known Sal Marino for nearly sixty years. We been there for each other in
the good times and bad. Fifty years ago, this summer, Sal stood next to me at the
altar as my best man. When my bride-to-be appeared at the entrance to the church,
he leaned into me and said, “Are you sure you want to go through with this?” My
answer: “I don’t have a choice.” Why? Because I believed in the Marriage Myth.
Despite my bride’s abusive father – who didn’t like my Italian heritage and long
hair at the time, my being younger than his daughter, and who wouldn’t even
attend the ceremony – we were going to live “happily ever after.” In fact, my artist
bride had drawn an RV with wings called Pegasus because we were going to “fly
away and be happy forever…”
Four years later we were divorced. Probably should have been sooner, too.
I enjoyed being “re-singled” for twelve years but, after being in an on-again, off-
again relationship for nine years, I decided to roll the dice since during that time,
we had really gotten to know each other, especially after moving in together. Did I
risk being in the 60% of second marriages ending in divorce? You bet, but I’m one
of the lucky ones. We’re still married after thirty-four years. Sure, we have our
ups and downs, but the main thing is we try to be open and supportive of each
other. We beat the odds but not everyone will. That’s why reading this book is
mandatory reading for those considering marriage. Learn what may be ahead for
