Marquez argues that our propensity to believe on faith and superstition, without evidence and reason, enslaves us and allows us to to treat each other tyranically.

He argues that human nature predisposes us to be moral. Therefore our morality does not come from religion. We attribute our morals to the religions we create around the gods we create.

In page 268, of his book, he writes:

In our refusal to accept our mortality, we delude ourselves in the world of make-believe: the world of superstition, religion and the supernatural. In our imaginations, we fantasise about a state of nirvana and the prospect of living forever in Heaven, where everything else in the universe revolves around our own happiness. We find the idea of this etheareal place to be so intoxicating that many people find the comfort and solace in religions...

...In our willingness to indulge in our fantasies, we make up even more stuff to explain and justify the details of these fantasies. But our lies have grown so out of touch with reality that we need to close our senses, from evidence and reason, to believe them. We begin accepting dogmatic ideas on the basis of pure faith alone. Ironically, however, our efforts to comfort ourselves from the idea of death stop us from living our life to its fullest potential.

At some stage, in the process of our trickeries, we coerce and intimidate others to behave, think and act a certain way so they can fit our make-believe worlds. At its extremes, literal believers of Holy Scriptures are willing to die and kill the rest of us if we do not share their belief in an afterlife and in a god that favours them above others. They attach little value to this life and so, they inflict suffering to the world at large, squandering their lives and the lives of others, for the misguided ideals they hold.

The tyranny of our beliefs oppresses us into living a restricted life, forcing us to suck up to gods that do not exist, because we believe they can grant us entry for an afterlife that is real only in our imaginations.

How do we stop our delusions and our wishful thinking? How can we stop our fears from paralysing us to a point where we believe we need illusions to operate? How can we live in the Here and Now and accept that this is the only life we have?

Time is all we have and there are only so many tomorrows. In casting aside the illusions of another life, we will finally acknowledge the preciousness of this life and feel most grateful for it...
