The second girl was much smaller than the first, with long sable hair. Sneaking from statue to statue, one behind the other, they silently advanced up the dimly lit hallway. When they came to the end of the corridor the girls were so close, if he had stood up in the doorway he could have touched them. He smiled at the picture they formed. Their flimsy attire seemed molded to their bodies, while their untied wrappers flapped behind them as they ran. They looked dressed for some man's fantasy in such nightwear. It was when they were about to reach the wide staircase at the end of the hall that the second girl turned and looked over her shoulder. The beginning of the stairway was flooded with light streaming from the lounge doorway, creating an inky black darkness beyond. Stopping directly in the path of the light, he could see her clearly. At the same instant he was gazing at her, she was looking directly at him and their eyes met. They each seemed frozen in place for just a moment. Each of them intent on meomorizing every detail of the other's face and form. She was a rare jewel. He had never been so quickly attracted to a woman before. His heart began to pound. He closed his eyes and shook his head. He opened his eyes a moment later, but no one was there.

"So you assumed him dead and continued on. How brave." he muttered.
Trying to remain quiet, she hissed. "I assumed he jilted me, not that he was hurt. I don't expect you to understand, but it was very difficult for me to believe that Kevin really wanted me to be his wife in the first place. So when he didn't come back, I figured he had changed his mind."
"So without checking, you jumped back in the sack with other men?" he sneered. "Maybe you are not right for him after all."
"I don't appreicaite you attitude and I don't expect your acceptance. What would you know of hardship? I had no way to confirm his whereabouts. I had no opportunity to locate him. I had no reason to doubt his word. He said he would be back to marry me and if he didn't cmome back, to assume he wouldn't. How hard is that to understand, Mr. Fancy Pants?"
"Calm down, Kathleen. I am not here to judge you."
"Oh really, then why are you?"
"Why am I here?"
"No, why are you judging me?"
"I'm not."
"You might not think so, but you are. I can tell from the condescending tone in your voice that you don't think I'm good enough for your friend. That if he hadn't made you promise, you wouldn't even be here talking with me. Women like me are good enough to bed, but have a conversation with, or marry, heaven forbid! Well, you have given me the message. Now, kindly remove yourself from my presence."
"There is more." He whispered.
"Finish then."
"Kevin wants you to accompany me to his home. He is waiting for you. He still wants to marry you."
"You and I both know I cannot go," sobbed Kathleen as she turned and ran.
