He sensed that the people in the garden were quickening their pace. Not rushing but focused on moving away from the tomb … and from the two laowai.
As the Chinese disappeared into the shadows of the various pathways leading in and out, Amos suddenly realized that they were now alone. His senses were on edge … a feeling he’d had before. Not welcome then, not welcome now. Survival mode …
Placing his hand on Brigit’s arm, he said, “This is strange. Have we missed something?”
Brigit looked around, now keenly aware of their surroundings. “I didn’t hear a bell or anything. Perhaps we should …” She stopped in mid-sentence, clinging tighter to Amos’s arm, her senses on high alert, watching the shadows.
Silently, one by one, figures appeared from around the corners of the tomb and out from behind the larger trees.
Dressed in dark uniforms.
Holding weapons.
As they appeared, they stopped in place, keeping their distance.
Facing the American couple.
The silence was deafening.
Brigit squeezed closer and whispered, “What’s happening?”
Suddenly a voice hit them from behind,
“Greetings. Have I the pleasure of meeting the famous Glinda?”
Neither Amos nor Brigit turned as they absorbed the shock of this obvious and ominous focus on them.
Amos did not register Glinda.
But Brigit did.
