“Gemma?” His whisper rasped with need. “I can’t go on ignoring you. I can’t pretend that this isn’t happening.” The words wove a hypnotic thread around her, pulling her closer and closer.
The end of the dock was deserted. Even under the tinkling of the rigging, she heard the rapid beating of her heart, felt the intense heat of his skin, smelled the faint, lingering scent of his cologne. The silver glints in his eyes reminded her of the sparkles of sun on a summer sea, and she couldn’t look away, couldn’t close her eyes as his mouth settled on hers. He deepened the kiss, urging her lips open. He tasted of salt and sun. Beneath that, indefinable and addictively intoxicating, was a unique musky warmth, a taste she wanted with every cell in her body. Nobody had ever made her vibrate with need like this.
His powerful, sailor’s hands buried themselves in her hair, cupping her head. The contrast of iron control and fire ravaged her.
She explored his mouth swallowing his groan, a sound of deep agony or inexpressible pleasure.
At last, he lifted his head, and his fingers slid forward to stroke her swollen, moist lips. “I have to have you, Gemma. I can ignore the gossip. I can accept that we can never touch each other at work, but I cannot walk away from this. It’s too good.”
Breathless, unable to form a single coherent thought, Gemma stared at him. The whole dock dipped and swayed as if she’d touched land after a month at sea. Little spurts of sensation fizzed in her blood, each one exploding like a firecracker. Nick’s seductive heat tempted her to throw herself on the pyre. At that moment she believed she could brave any consequences.

Gemma Brown has always been a little outspoken, nothing wrong with that of course. So when she just happens to voice her opinion of the new CEO, Nick Matheson, in his hearing, it’s not all bad, is it? Well, not exactly. Facing Facts by Helen Ravell starts out from the first paragraph with laughter and continues along the same vein to the reader’s profound enjoyment. Gemma has good intentions, but as we discover more than a few issues with her follow through. Luckily for Gemma Nick by opposite, is very professional and decides to take her comments under advisement and to use her talents – business-wise, to help with his current project. At least that is the initial plan as both Gemma and Nick fight both tooth and nail to keep their relationship strictly business. Both main characters struggle along trying to ignore those “other” feelings, managing to fool only each other and entertaining their friends and co-workers the entire time. As we know, life seldom follows our needs or desires, which in this instance leads to a truly wonderful romance.
Ms. Ravell is a fantastic storyteller: I giggled, I laughed, and I chuckled my way through the entire book. I loved Gemma’s adventurous spirit and her most endearing trait that pseudo-paranoid need to over analyze every situation. Luckily, she has her best friend Suze there as a calming influence, and occasional catalyst. Not that Gemma and Nick need a “catalyst” to incite the physical part of their relationship – can you say steamy? While not giving away too much of the story, things are not completely smooth sailing between the pair even though they are expert sailors. How could it be with two such strong-willed individuals? I thoroughly enjoyed Facing Facts and hope to read more from this author in the future; she has a unique style and a rare comedic timing that would lend itself well to almost any genre. I recommend this book to anyone looking to for a light-hearted break, you will not be disappointed.

Gemma Brown had trouble with her tongue especially when she’d had too much to drink. At a company party welcoming their new CEO, Nick Matheson, Gemma proceeded to tell him exactly what was wrong with the company. She worked in the Client Services Department of Bellon Associates and hated that her immediate supervisor was constantly vetoing her ideas. She realized she had overstepped herself and expected to be fired the next morning.
Nick Matheson was gorgeous. He was furious when he found that Gemma’s supervisor had fired her. He contacted her and asked her to come to his office. He offered her a temporary position working for her boss’ boss. She was thrilled that he was preparing her for the director’s job. The fact that they had such chemistry was just too much to ignore.
Ms. Helen Ravell has written a great book which I’m thrilled to have read. This was my first by this author but it definitely will not be my last. I like the way she portrayed her characters, especially Gemma and Nick. Their expectations were more alike than either realized. All they knew was the sex was sizzling. The chemical reaction to each other was explosive. Gemma had some alpha attributes but she was incapable of controlling them after a couple glasses of champagne. The traits he possessed were more channeled in the needed direction. However, his eyes and his brain seldom functioned simultaneously.
In my opinion, this storyline was enhanced by the qualities of her flat mate, Suze. This secondary character certainly made the difference in how this book progressed. I liked the way she reacted and felt as if she was someone I knew personally. (I would hope to have her in my corner if I ever needed help.)
This book is a definite keeper. I loved the total picture. The sexual tension was sizzling. The fire stopped just short of electric shocks. The ending was a surprise to me. Happily ever after went one step further. It’s a keeper!
