A bloody sight greeted her in the dawning light. A pure white cat lay in the gutter, gashed in many places. Alongside was the culprit: the shards from a discarded, broken beer bottle. How the cat came to be mangled was a mystery. Perhaps it had accidentally trodden on the glass and, in its surprise and bafflement, become entangled in the multiple sharp pieces like a fly in a spider’s web. Its fur was stained in many places with thick, congealing blood. The rising sun shed a red ray from its prism of colors down upon the tortured animal.
Every time the cat tried to lick its open wounds, it was besieged by three rats. They ran in and bit and tore. The cat cried its soul-shattering mews into the new day. It struck at its attackers with outstretched, ichorous claws. The rats backed off, only to resume the onslaught.
