To Jonathan, the surgery seemed to take forever. If Bella perished, he would never be able to forgive himself. "Please help me to accept the things I cannot change, give me the courage to change those I can and give me the wisdom to know the difference...the wisdom to know the difference..." this last sentence echoing in his head. Jonathan was by her side the moment she was transported from the operating room's step down unit to her private room. He was allowed five minutes with her. "Bella, I'm so sorry. I was a fool to think it could have gone better. Please forgive me." Jonathan bowed his head, closed his eyes and prayed. "Lord I beg of you, spare her life and that of her child and take me instead." Tears streamed down his face and a single teardrop fell on her hand as he kissed it goodbye. Jonathan knew David would be there soon, so he leaned over and whispered into Bella's ear: "I love you Bella and I always will"; kissed her softly on her cheek and quickly exited the room. Bella was in a deep coma but she heard him, his words echoing in her subconscious; "Please don't leave me Jonathan." David walked into her room and found Bella lying still, deep in a coma with tears flowing from her eyes.

This is a story about a woman who is accidentally shot and goes into a coma. Upon awakening, she is without memory. Left with no past, present, or future anticipations our minds tend to create for ourselves, she moves forward in life following her heart and her senses. Few people can do such a thing and tend to find themselves following the path of tradition and expectation. "The Encounter" is a guided reflection on how our soul is drawn into the passions that fulfill our hearts in ways expectation and beliefs cannot come close to. There is much feeling and sensuality put into this book allowing the reader to come alive to what is most authentic within us all.

From the first page, The Encounter draws the reader into a world that is quite foreign to many. There is a feeling of being immersed and truly understanding the thoughts and inner workings behind some of the most heinous things that humans can do to one another. Yet, in the midst of that confusion, love can blossom and fight, fiercely, to survive. The book synopsis is summarized with the words "Everything has a price". This is a perfect phrase to embody the nature of the story and of life.
Be prepared to do NOTHING else once you pick up this book, until you have read the last word. Once you enter Bella's world, the rest of the world will fade in comparison.
Soldier's Gap is a non-traditional mystery with literary elements. The high school principal is brutally murdered, but Deputy Sheriff Dave Jenkins's search for meaning and love is a much more significant theme.
