The Knight of the Golden Eagle is about to become truly golden when he goes against Mark Andrew's better judgement, but it could be an enlightening experience for the stubborn Italian.
The old castle of Wewelsburg, once used by the Nazis in their relentless search for occult powers, takes on new life when members of the Order of the Red Cross of Gold move in temporarily and attempt to set up a powerful deterrent to Joseph Daniel's ancient evil in a strangely twisted alliance.
Things go a bit awry when some of the younger members of the Order delve into the occult realms themselves. What other secrets lie buried in dusty chambers under the old castle? They are determined to find out, but what they learn is perhaps one of the most well-kept secret of the ages. New forces are unleashed upon the tumultuous state of world affairs, but whether these forces are for better or worse remains to be seen.

“So ho! Nathanael!” The red-clad angel’s face lit up at the sight of the Grand Master. He held out his left hand toward Luke without looking at him and the apprentice dropped the ring in it. He kept his right hand under his mantle as he slipped the ring back on his finger.
“Brother.” Edgard was obviously shocked and beside himself to see the creature standing in the bright sunlight of the garden. “It has been a very long time.”
“Indeed it has. Too long, it would seem.” Lucifer smiled slightly at him. “I have learned from this young one that you are a great leader of men. I must ask if they follow you willingly.”
“You would do better to ask them.” Edgard retorted. “What do you want here, Lucifer? The war is long over and you slept through the greater part.”
“Oh? Was I sleeping?” The angel seemed almost hurt by the accusation. “I thought it more a curse than blessed sleep. I would take it that you knew what had become of us? And yet, you did nothing to help your afflicted brothers. Why is that, Nathanael? Was it because you wanted less competition?”
“I am not… I have never competed with any of my brothers for anything. I am doing the Master’s work. It is like the turning of the stars, it never ends. You have not answered my question. Now that you are released, what will you do? Where will you go? What will you do with my… people?”
Lucifer began to walk about in a small circle under the tree, looking down at his boots.
“I have learned that you have released one of the sons of Yaldaboath. You may have need of my services yet. A band of warriors is no good without a war. Yet, you say the war is over. I have seen it in the mind of the young one that it is not so.” He stopped and looked pointedly at Luke Andrew. “Are we all so given to lies and treachery now? This son of Uriel lies with great ease and you lie as well, Nathanael. Is lying no longer a sin?”
“Lying is still a sin and so is the taking of innocent persons as hostage. You have five of my followers in your custody. That would make us at odds, Brother. Release my people and then we may speak of the war.”
“I am surprised to see you here.” Lucifer began to walk about again in the circle, perusing his boots as he kicked leaves and twigs about on the ground. “And I am surprised to learn of the presence of so many others. How can I have surety, if I release my hostages that you will not muster my brothers and sisters against me? How do I know that you will not turn against me yourself? That you have not come under the sway of Yaldaboath?”
“I have enough enemies without creating more from my brothers.” Edgard held out both hands.
Lucifer stopped and leaned toward him, scrutinizing him carefully.
“You have not taken care of yourself, Nathanael. You have become ugly. You who were so very fair to look upon! Why? Why have you become so careless?” He removed his right hand from under his mantle and in it, was the amber globe from atop the staff of the baculus. “Raziel was most distressed to see it in the hands of the young female creature. Surely she is not so trained in the arts that she could wield such a device with ease?”
“Great Father in heaven!” Edgard’s eyes grew wide and he turned on Luke Andrew. Mark Andrew’s son made a face of apology. “Why didn’t you tell me? What is this, Luke Ramsay?”
