Excerpt
Chapter One
(Just a hint)
The high-pitched blaring of the siren penetrated the frigid silence of the cloudless night, manifesting a haunting echo far into the distance. As the ambulance sped down the highway toward the local hospital, Drew's body trembled as she recalled the horror and devastation that had just recently occurred. One of the emergency technicians interrupted Drew's thoughts when he placed a tourniquet around her arm and was tapping her hand in search of a vein.
"Ma'am I'm going to start an IV. There will be a bit of a sting. Please try not to move."
"Ouch!" Drew shrieked and flinched as the young technician inserted the needle into the vein of her left hand and began the intravenous fluids. She glanced toward Stephen, who was lying on the stretcher across from her. Another technician was diligently working to stop the bleeding from several lacerations as well as the stab wound that had been inflicted by one of Reverend Soulz evil followers. Already nauseated and weak from the loss of blood, Drew turned away from the disturbing scene to check on her newborn son, who was sleeping peacefully beside her. After determining that he was fine, she closed her eyes, in an attempt to relax.
In what seemed like only seconds, the lights of the emergency entrance to the hospital awakened Drew. The technicians quickly removed her and Stephen from the ambulance and placed her stretcher in a hallway along with several other patients waiting their turn to see a physician. As usual, the hospital was intensely hectic and extremely busy. A medical crew promptly transferred Stephen to another stretcher and dashed out of sight. With a heavy sigh, Drew closed her eyes again and tried to relax, unsure of when she would see Stephen again. The soothing sound of a Negro woman humming Amazing Grace helped immensely in relieving Drew's anxiety. Just as she was about to enter into a deep sleep, an unexpected outburst of agitated doctors roused her to a disturbance that was occurring down the hall. She sat up on the side of the stretcher and strained to see and hear what the commotion was all about. A frantic doctor was yelling to an RN,
This patient has lost a lot of blood. A transfusion is needed! STAT! Who is responsible for this?"
"Doctor, no pulse could be located."
"Did the coroner pronounce this person dead?"
"Yes, doctor," responded the flustered nurse.
A medical team, led by the angry doctor, sped by Drew. They were pushing a stretcher occupied by a body covered with a blood stained sheet. They turned into the room across the hall from where she was waiting and slammed the door shut. Drew could hear the conversations between the doctors and nurses as they yelled their questions and commands to one another.
"Can anyone tell me who this man is?"
"He had no identification, Doctor."
"Someone call the police and get this guy finger printed. His family needs to be notified if we can find them."
The doctors exited the room and shortly after, an RN stormed out the door and barked the command to the clerk at the front desk. Two more nurses followed her. Just as they were a few feet away, an orderly opened the door and yelled to the clerk.
"He’s wearing an ID bracelet. His first name is Victor."
