Charlotte E. Thompson, M.D. has been a practicing pediatrician for fifty years. She holds a B.A. and M.D. from Stanford University, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at U C San Diego Medical School. In 2005 and 2007, she was named as one of the Top Pediatricians in the United States by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.
Dr. Thompson is a mother, a grandmother, and the author of eight books including Raising a Handicapped Child published in 1986, and now in its fifth edition.

As a young medical student, it never occurred to me to be anything but a
pediatrician. I loved visiting the babies in the nurseries during my internship
and residency, and time spent with children of all ages was always special.
Now the babies and children I cared for during the beginning of my pediatric
practice are having babies of their own. It is always a red-letter day when one of
my “babies” brings her child for a visit or sends me a picture.
Parenting today is much more difficult than it was in the past. There are too many
choices, new worries, and too much marketing for infants’ and kids’ products.
Many parents get caught up in the, “keeping up with the Joneses syndrome”. It is
far more important for parents to keep their kids safe and spend time with them
than to buy the latest in clothes, equipment, or toys.
I hope this book will be a helpful resource for parents of infants and small
children. Because doctors spend less time with parents and kids these days, there
are multiple questions that get unanswered. This book should provide many
answers for all the questions you have, making parenting easier and more fun.
