As a young mother, I would have loved to have had a book giving me practical
advice about caring for infants and children. I had an M.D. degree from Stanford
Medical School and a license to practice medicine, but knew absolutely nothing
about the day-to-day care of a newborn or how to raise a child. We were given
good pediatric training, but it was mostly about diagnosing and treating sick
babies and children. There were classes on child development, but they were no
help to me when Jennifer was not sleeping, having difficulty nursing, or crying.
The hospital where she was born did not have a nursing consultant and the
pediatrician just checked for problems. In many ways, I think this lack of help
made me a better pediatrician, because I could understand the fear mothers and
fathers feel when confronted with a crying, miserable newborn or child or one
who will not sleep or eat.
In a new office, I had a small room added where mothers could nurse their babies
and added a classroom and treatment room. I made many house calls, answered
my own telephone when I was on call nights and weekends, and always met
parents in hospital emergency rooms. In addition, printed sheets were provided
about various problems which parents told me were of great help. Some of the
advice and instructions have been incorporated into this book, as well as answers
to the many questions I was asked by mothers and fathers.
I hope this book will help all readers find the joy in parenting that one father has
found. Recently he said to me, “My wife and I have so much fun with our children.”
