          LADDER OF CLOUDS

Next to me
         the ex-Bronco player
  sports a shock of gold
   against medium dark skin—
    four chains around his neck
     silent watches bracelets
      proud rings
       one earring.
From the window seat
 I watch thermal winds swell.
We float on angels’ wings. . .
   darkest gray crest higher
    sunlight climbing
     the ladder of clouds.

We hear a rumbling in the plane
double back to Denver for repairs
giving me more time with Randy Fuller.
We talk like siblings, his words sweet
 as sunflowers just unbending.

Positioned to gamble with his buddy
he invites me to join them.
I decline, spinster that I am.
Jokers
 fifty-dollar bills
  twenties glide freely
when slapped down from on high
    with hoots of raucous laughter.

Passengers in the back row can hear
their ginger ales spilling on their napkins.

I hesitate to exit the plane.
 Head down
  cap over his eyes
   Randy drops the best farewell:
    “See ya’, Kath.”
     And I will.

how much by chance that is."

Professional Reviews

Astoundingly Idiosyncratic
“Kathy Wehrenberg’s poems are astoundingly idiosyncratic. In a totally original voice, she speaks of everyday details, but defines them in a language dense with word-play. In her poems metaphors seem to arise from some strange insight into the seemingly mundane world, but they often come together in a last line so unexpected–but oh so right!–that it makes one inhale in surprise.”

Meaning and Sympathy Are Born
“Kathy Wehrenberg doesn’t barrel-race through the West, but goes slowly, noticing the dusty, woods dandruff on the spruce and the drunk in the parking lot. The rodeo and the drive-in movie theater are mysterious circles on the landscape where meaning
and sympathy are born.”
----- Fr. Hugh Feiss,
Order of St.Benedict

Reviews for "Mad Dance of Bees"

The 'PAGE TURNER' in color, is like a katie-cat. A calico katie-cat. It's almost a purr, how comfortable you are; nestled with Chopin and Brahms, Bach and Bartok. I think music is really a part of you...so much so, that you THINK lyrically!?. Something like that Katie...As Always~~your Alex.

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.

Next Arrivals by Robin Ouzman Hislop

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
