Throughout history, our search for the soul has been a long and fruitless one. It has a long and interesting history going back even before the Ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. Despite this long history and a large collection of research data on the soul, we are no closer to understanding the soul today than we were in the time of Aristotle in Ancient Greece! The official scientific view is that the soul does not exist. Yet, even though our search for a definition of what constitutes life and living goes on with no resolution and none in sight, our scientific research data strongly suggests that the soul exists! Although we can easily distinguish most living things from nonliving things, we are no closer at defining those differences today than we were thousands of years ago.
Many of us spend most of our life seeking to save our soul, whatever that may mean, and doing whatever we feel is necessary to continue a life after the present life. Yet, we have no idea what is necessary to continue life after life, if it is possible, or even if the soul exists. Still, we hope and believe in the words of great spiritual teachers like Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Baha’u’llah, the Bab, Zoroaster (also known as Zarathrustra or Zarathustra) and others like them! Despite our tendency to believe the soul exists, most of us probably would not believe in the soul if given actual factual information about it. If that is true, then I hope the information you will find here will test your beliefs! For, in reality, science has unknowingly gathered a tremendous amount of research data demonstrating the existence of the soul. This data shows, quite convincingly, that the soul exists, that it existed before our physical birth and continues to exist after death. In fact, the data indicates that the soul reincarnates from one life to another, over and over again, life after life. For Christians who may reject reincarnation on religious grounds (as I once did, but not necessarily on religious grounds), I wish to point out that Christians use the term “resurrection” instead of reincarnation. Despite Christian claims to the contrary, the terms are one and the same! John the Baptist was supposed to be the reincarnation of Elijah (Matthew 11:13; 17:10-13), so reincarnation is consistent with the teachings of Christianity and Judaism. Since Islam is also a Bible based religion (after the Koran, the Bible is the second most holy book in Islam), reincarnation is also consistent with Islam.
One might ask, “If the soul reincarnates, why don’t we have memories of our past lives?” Actually, some of us do. In fact, most of us might have fleeting memories of past lives without being aware that we are experiencing past life scenarios in dreams and in some random thoughts. Yet, it is quite possible that many dream experiences are actually memories and experiences from past lives. If we had memories of our past lives, would that be proof that we have lived before? Perhaps, but the absence of such memories is not reason to dismiss the possibility that we have lived before. Consider this; few of us have any but the most fleeting memories of events during the first 4 to 6 years of our present life, and fewer still have memories of the age of 2 or younger! Even so, we know that we did live from birth to the age of 2 or 6 or whenever your first memories of life occur. If those first few years of this life are such a blank, why should we be surprised that we have no memories of events from previous lives?
Around of the turn of the 19th into the 20th century, Sigmund Freud became the first psychologist to be widely recognized for acknowledging that sexual matters are important to the soul, that is, to the basic human makeup (since psychology does not recognize the existence of the soul even though it is the study of the soul). His ideas led to the development of psychoanalysis as a means of helping people resolve psychological problems! He recognized that sexual matters occupy a large amount of time and energy in our everyday existence. Even many people who aren’t constantly pursuing sex spend a great deal of time in a losing, usually religious effort trying to stop others from doing so. Most of the time, mankind’s attention is riveted on sex and food! And, while food tends to be of more concern to people, sex tends to take up more of our time and thought. We even try to incorporate the two by going out to eat during courtship, or “eating” various anatomical parts when in the process of sexual stimulation and petting! The only time our search for food diverts our attention from our pursuit of sex is when food becomes scarce or when we are faced with going without a meal or two. Only then does our pursuit of sex take a back seat to our pursuit for food. It turns out that our endless pursuit of sex is a quality of the soul, not an act of society or of human depravity! Despite our view that sex is the act of procreation, sex is actually the act of creating, and creating is the purpose of the soul! Procreation is only a small component of the creative process. The soul plays a role in EVERY ASPECT of the creative process! Thus, sex, that is, the creative process, is the main function of the soul!
Romantic novels are the most popular and biggest selling books in the world. Many people, mostly women, devour them constantly. The Bible is most popular selling book in the world. After that is probably the Koran. So, while no one single romantic novel can claim to be the most popular selling book in the world, romance holds a big place in the world of literature sales, and, even though no single romantic novel outsells the Bible, far more romance novels than Bibles sell each year. The world of television is similar. Whereas no TV soap opera may be able to claim the title of the most popular TV program of all, TV soap operas have among the most captivated and faithful of all TV audiences. These two observations suggest that sex and religion stand out as the world’s most popular subjects. The Internet confirms the popularity of sex since sex sites are the most popular sites on the net!
Despite Sigmund Freud’s enlightening concepts regarding the relationship between sex and the soul, that relationship has yet to be recognized for what it truly seems to be, that is, a fundamental human and spiritual relationship. The “sex” being referred to here is not the raw, pornographic sexual relationship associated with sex shops, pornography, penal-vaginal penetration and prostitution even though those endeavors are grounded in the exact same base. Rather, we are referring to a more basic and fundamental idea of sex as “the creative process”. In fact, throughout this book, the term “sex” refers to the “creative process” and the term “love” refers to the “creative force”. Christians call this creative force “The Holy Ghost”. Elsewhere, it is called “prana”, “mana”, “chi” and “ki”, but it has dozens of different names around the world and, whatever it is, it appears to be a real force. Sex (i.e., the creative process), love (i.e., the creative force) and the soul stand as fundamental concepts behind everything in life, whether we are speaking of plant life, animal life or the life of the highest animal, the human animal!
Different cultures and different religions have viewed and approached sex differently throughout history. Western religions generally viewed sex negatively and forbade people to engage in it except for procreation. For example, the Catholic Church once viewed sex as acceptable between married couples, and yet found ways to forbid sex even between married partners. This was accomplished by creating reasons even for the married to abstain from sexual pleasures such as during holidays, festivals and the like every day of the week (Tannahill, 1980). Despite these attempts, our present and increasing global population suggests that such attempts were not successful in Europe or in other places where the Church dominated, and probably would not have been successful anywhere else in the world either! Some Eastern religions took just the opposite view. The Tantric religions and the Hindu religions view sex as a sacred and godly pleasure, to be indulged and enjoyed, but not to be abused! Islam, which has its own sexual restrictions, has never viewed sex with the same disdain as in the Christian religions.
Within the first two years of the 1990s, I began to realize that science might have committed a grave oversight. Science may have had firm information about the soul buried within the scientific literature. Every week, millions of Americans and billions of people worldwide attend churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and elsewhere for spiritual revival in an effort to learn about and better understand God and their soul. Christians refer to their effort as an attempt to “save” their soul. I often ask Christians the meaning of the expression “Save the soul”. I have never heard anyone give an answer that wasn’t filled with repetitive Christian dogma. You will hear the same type of dogma, but a different version, as you travel from one religion to another. Not all the religions can be correct. Their versions of reality are too different. They can all be wrong, but not all of them can be correct.
Long ago, I reasoned that if the soul exists, it does so independent of all religions. Religions tend to lull people away from their search for the soul and entice them to embrace the dogma of their particular religion of choice to the point of being unreasonable, irrational, blind, and even ridiculous. Religion serves a necessary and important role in the lives of followers and in society as a whole, but those who blindly follow religious dogma without attempting to make sense of it have lost the true value of religion in human life and existence.
