An android named Shane loses his job and, finding himself without direction or meaning, goes on a search for the most unlikely of things- love. This search leads him into a life of sex and crime where he must learn to pimp and hustle until he can afford that which he so dearly desires.
Fits snugly into the Bizarro Fiction genre, whatever that is.
Excerpt
Loud and incessant warnings blared in the Captain’s ear. The flashing red lights and cries of panic from her crew wouldn’t let her take a breath. Closing her eyes, she practiced her emergency anxiety calming technique. A sandy beach stretched out beneath her feet, sand getting between her toes. Gentle waves lapped on the shoreline beside her as she looked up to the luminescent stars above. From far away a single dot of light moved across the sky, towards her, and she squinted her eyes to see it. It was coming from starboard.
“Diggs! Bear starboard and full speed ahead. When the torpedo gets near bank sharply.”
“Yes, Captain.”
As the ship’s thrusters ignited Albert thought to himself, ‘But, there’s a giant black hole...’ The words never made it past his gaping maw.
Diggs focused on his readings, “Banking in three... two... “ The ship shook violently as the torpedo exploded off its prow.
The Captain held on to her chair. “Damage report! Diggs, can you get us out of here!?”
Albert was upside down on the floor of the bridge. The ship twisting on its side as he tried to stand, he found himself jammed up against his console. Looking up, he saw Diggs staring wide eyed at the damage readout.
“Engines are out, Captain. The black hole is pulling us in.”
Amid the impending wreckage The Captain heard a delighted giggling. She looked over to catch a glimpse of a little girl’s white dress disappearing behind a console. The little girl hid, peeking out at the Captain and smiling.
“Hey,” the Captain called out. “Where did you come from?”
The little girl stepped out into view, regarded the Captain and then reached out her little hand in beckoning. “Come.” She stepped away, backwards, towards the air lock, laughing. “This way.”
Feeling she didn’t want the little girl to leave her, the Captain reached out her hand and, seeing it before her eyes, felt strange that the skin of her hand should be rotten and the bones protruding like teeth, but the little girl was now entering the airlock and the Captain had to get to her feet or she would be gone.
The Captain followed the little girl into the airlock and a bony finger pressed the exit lever. The door opened with a hiss.
People bustled along the streets of Chinatown as The Captain stepped down from the ship’s platform. As she looked at the skin on her hands re-growing before her eyes the little girl hurried away. The Captain shouted, "Wait!", but quickly lost sight of her in the crowd. She went in the direction that the little girl had run, bumping into busy people with baskets and dodging bicycles. There, by the food stand she found the little girl sitting at a stool, eating kung pao chicken next to what must be her parents. She came up behind the girl and realized the couple sitting nearby were her own parents and the little girl, as she watched her slurp a noodle between her lips, was her.
