Excerpt

[Dr. Kate Newcomb operated] out of her Boulder Junction home. Gas rationing in the war years required her to be closer to her patients, so in 1942 she opened an office in Woodruff. It included a tiny living area in the back, where she stayed when bad weather prevented her from returning to Boulder Junction. Though the weather may have kept her from home, it never kept her from her rounds. When all other means of transportation failed, she was not above strapping on her snowshoes and trudging through the drifts and driving snow to care for ailing patients, earning her an affectionate sobriquet, "Angel on Snowshoes."

She saw between 20 and 45 patients and averaged 100 miles per day on her car. She was very disturbed that the patients had to travel long distances to Rhinelander or Tomahawk for care beyond what she could provide. She founded Lakeland Memorial Hospital, built with funds from a penny drive initiated by local students. The "Million Penny Parade" gained nationwide recognition and catapulted the backwoods physician to fame when she appeared in 1954 on Ralph Edwards' television program, "This Is Your Life."
