"There are thousands of homeless people out there! How do we persuade them that we're the good guys who only want to help them?" Another one from the group stated.
Then surprisingly, one millionaire had the answer.
"We become them! Yes, that's it! We dress like them...we live like them, we become them! What better way to show we love and care for them without becoming a part of their world! We can show what it means to help one another and not make them feel inferior in any way. My God, we can help them in so many ways! I mean we are very wealthy individuals, there are physicians, attorneys, bankers, contractors, restaurant owners and real estate businessmen among us! We can make a difference! We can give them back the sense of morality they deserve as human beings! They need to know that there is a better way of life gentlemen! We should do this."
"But how does this work? What about our wives, our families? How do we explain all of this to them?" Many uttered their inquiries.
"We don't. Let's just leave it be, for now, just to see how things go! Next month, this is just going to be another big business meeting gentlemen. You all follow me? We leave nothing open for suspicion. We will arrange suitable schedules for when we want to embrace our communities. We spend a week or two as homeless individuals then we return to our wealthy lifestyles. It's a big sacrifice but for a very worthy cause. So which one of you are with me all the way?"
Five hands were eagerly raised, then slowly seven more, while hesitant in a moments thought the remaining nine members of the group lifted their hands to ensure agreement which completed the count of 21.
A lofty goal. But I would caution against the idea of someone “living like” for two weeks, knowing that they would return to their pampered lifestyles. I also have a problem with charity being used to solve deep systemic societal problems. It too easily becomes very selective and may play favorites. Ending up favoring the charity more than the targeted populations.
There is nothing wrong with charity. It's just that fairness has to be applied.
