Julia, a fun-loving, wealthy woman, lives a country club lifestyle but longs for "something more." Claire, a hard-charging corporate attorney, fights corporate politics as her age starts working against her. Gentle Ellen longs for a social life but is caring for two ailing parents. Mickey is a young newlywed with domineering parents who wants to find her own way.

As they meet in a foreign language class and form a study group, they struggle with their differences and a mutual dislike. Their lives, though, are about to unravel. Cracks appear in Julia's "idyllic" life. Claire will face career challenges that she never thought would happen to her.
