He looked down at me and I felt that old familiar tug. I guess I could have started sliding back into those old familiar feelings. It had been three long years since we had been in the same vicinity, but he had crept back in quite a few times. Here he was, staring down at me with the same blue eyes I had read so many promises in before. I could have misconstrued that long gaze as something romantic. I could have, but my ex-husband had been blessed with a knack for sometimes ruining promising moments.
“Janey,” John said from behind the counter.
Ryan looked up, nodding at the man he hadn’t ever really liked. “Hey man,” he said.
John returned the nod and leaned over the counter, his chin resting on his crooked arm.
“Well, thanks for this,” Ryan said, turning his attention back to me. “It was good to see you again.”
I nodded. “Yup.”
When he was gone and the door was locked I turned on my ex, still standing behind the counter.
“What the hell, John?”
“What, what the hell?”
“Did you have to stand there like a jealous husband?” I made my way around the counter, grabbing my purse and sunglasses. “He’s a man picking up a baby carriage for crying out loud!”
“Then why don’t you act like it!”
I couldn’t believe my ears, nor could I believe my eyes. This was the man who, four years ago, had told me he hadn’t loved me for a while, that I was more like a roommate with benefits, acting like a jealous jerk. He was a jealous jerk! To say I was livid is only a slight understatement.
“If you didn’t need a friend right now I would kick your ass out,” I snipped. “Now come on!”
I didn’t wait on him. The doorknob had been set to lock automatically when it closed, so there was no need. Instead I stormed out the door and across the street. He followed almost immediately, his head down.
“I’m sorry,” he said after a few tense minutes at the dinner table. I had already ordered my first fruity drink and an appetizer, while he had opted for a cold long neck and half my appetizer.
“Sorry, John? For what reason could you possibly be sorry? For embarrassing me, perhaps? Or for acting like a friggin caveman?”
