A Collection of Short Science Fiction Stories Written in a Korean Rice Paddy
These are the short stories written over fifty years ago when the author was a 21 year old soldier stationed in Korea. Assigned to a small radio detachment of just 14 men, Bob spent long nights sitting in a radio hut perched on the back of a truck parked in a rice paddy. Nights were passed writing out stories and in 2009 the yellowed pages finally made it into print.
Excerpt
Silently the craft, having come up out of the water horizontally, began to right itself. After attaining an upright position it moved slowly just above the water without creating new waves. Once over land the ship came to rest on adjustable legs that compensated for the slope of the shore and held the ship in a vertical position.
Then all was quiet. Cyrus and Sweenie crouched quietly in their hiding place, about two hundred feet from where the craft sat. Nothing moved and two hours passed. Finally Cyrus whispered, “Suppose we just walk up to that thing and knock on the door. Maybe no one’s home.”
Another hour passed and the sun was just beginning to peek over the surrounding mountains. As the first rays of light hit the valley, the two men hiding in the brush heard a low whine, sounding like a mechanical winch. Slowly a large door, that had been indistinguishable, began to open downward. It was on the side of the craft facing a bit to their left, so the two moved slowly to where they were directly facing the opening. Once the door was fully open with its top edge resting on the ground, ridges began appearing on the ramp created by the door. 'Traction,' Cyrus thought.
They could not see anything inside the vessel, as its interior was dark, but then Sweenie touched the ranger’s arm and whispered, “I think I just saw something move in there.” He nervously fingered the trigger of his weapon.
