The stifling heat of the club combined with the rum she had just consumed was making her perspire, and Raquel opened the top two buttons of her blouse, fanning herself with a cocktail napkin. The tapes and CDs had now been replaced by a live band kicking up a fantastic beat. Colored lights flashed on and off, further contributing to the crowd’s mood of abandonment. The dancers seemed to have let go of all their inhibitions, if they’d ever had any to begin with. As she had in the car, Raquel swayed slightly to the music’s pulsing rhythm, her eyes half closed. Was it her imagination, or was that one of the tunes she’d danced to long ago in Paulette’s basement?
“Eh, beautiful. Come and dance wit’ a man like me,” purred a voice close to her ear.
Opening her eyes, Raquel saw a slim, sinewy, dark- skinned man stretching out his hand.
Why not?
Almost without her own volition, she put her hand in his and let him lead her to the dance floor. They found a space barely big enough for the two of them, but there was plenty of room for the languid, undulating moves of
Caribbean dance. Shedding her inhibitions as the others had, Raquel surrendered to the music as the singer crooned, “All we have to do is live in love and harmony.”
A tendril or two escaped from the tight knot on the crown of her head, clinging to her damp face. Then the knot itself loosened as she moved, and a stream of thick black curls cascaded over her shoulders and back. Feeling the beat deep within her, Raquel raised her full skirt high on her thighs as she descended slowly, her legs spread apart, swiveling and pumping her hips in a provocative rhythm. Completely unaware of her partner, or of anything else except the music, she deliberately made her mind a blank. As long as she was dancing and more than a little drunk, it was easy to blot out the things she didn’t want to remember.
Her partner, however, was not content to be ignored. Aroused by Raquel’s seductive movements, his hands roamed eagerly over her body, clutching at her buttocks and caressing her full breasts. Under any other circumstances, Raquel would have been outraged, but tonight it didn’t seem to matter. Nothing mattered anymore. Laughing almost hysterically, she responded to his amorous pawing.
Three men in business suits sat at a table nearby, watching Raquel’s gyrations intently.
“I t’ink we’ve come to the right place,” the one in the brown suit said to his companions.
“I think you’re right,” said the man in gray pinstripes. “She’s not her twin, but pretty close to it.”
“Yeah,” the first man said, licking his lips. “Everyt’ing about her looks perfect, right down to her littie round—”
“All right, Benjamin, that’s enough. Watch your mouth,” the third and most elegantly dressed man snapped.
“I’m sorry, mon. No need to get excited, since it’s not your sistah anyway. Can I help it if this one does what she’s doin’ so well?”
“This looks like it’s going to be easier than we expected. One club, and we find the right girl.” The third man rose, a faint smile on his thin lips. “Fifty thousand should do it, but that’s the limit. I’ll be leaving now. Make sure you two don’t let her get away.”
