Its 7:01 and the evening sky is cloudy over Denver as the last of the lunch goers are filing back into Torry's office supply to return to work. The final stragglers have assembled in the lobby, where they're about to be checked in by Willma Barnes the night security guard. The mood is playful as Bobby Silva asks Willma, "So when we going out Willma?"
"Cmon Bobby I don't have all day to be foolin' round with you, you're holding up the line." She replies sternly. "You don't know what you're missing." He says with a boyish smile. Picking up the portable metal detector Willma begins to pass it in front of the young man. A flash of light catches her eye and she watches as a flaming car rises into the dark skies. An instant later the giant picture windows implode and a deafening roar fills the atrium, lifting the startled employees of their feet, bringing shards of glass down like the heavy showers of a mid-summers storm in Denver.
There's a constant ringing echoing in Willma's ears as she struggles to remove a folding table from her chest. Willma surveys the room, as she tries to regain her bearings. The employees are scattered all about the room. Brenda Jackson lay motionless against the lunchroom door, Bobby Silva lies pinned beneath the large metal detector, blood flowing from a gash in his head and eighteen year old Tanner Liggins lay face down in the atrium flower bed, the back of his blue TORRY'S T shirt stained with blood.
Crawling through the broken glass Willma reaches Bobby as the secretary and managers rush from the upstairs offices. Bobby and Willma lift the metal detector just enough so he can free himself. "Are you Okay?" she asks her friend as other stunned employees stare helplessly through the lunchroom door. "I think so." he replies wiping the blood from his face.
Willma Barnes a former Marine sergeant begins to take charge. "Go check on Brenda, Everybody move back from the door!" She orders. Stumbling on wobbly legs Willma climb into the flower bed. She can hear Tanner's anguished cries. The managers stand like statues in disbelief. Willma lifts the blood stained garment and sees the pieces of glass lodged in his back. "Someone get a wet towel!" she yells at the employees still standing in the lunchroom door. Brenda is now sitting up in Bobby's arms crying in his chest
Night manager Frank Lyons finally joins her at Tanner's side with the wet towels. "Try to clean his back and make him comfortable the medic will want to see this." Frank nods his head. Willma's head is beginning to clear as she follows the chord to the up turned phone under what used to be a company computer. Processing the damage she dials 911. Emergency assistance, How may I help you? the voice on the phone calmly asks.
"There's been an accident at Torry's supply warehouse." Willma quickly replies
"What's the nature of the accident?" the voice asks
"There's been an explosion in the parking lot." Willma responds
"Are there any serious injuries?" the voice asks.
Willma stares at her casualties and explains, "One kids got some pretty bad cuts on his back the rest are just minor cuts and bruises so far." Willma again turns her attention to the parking lot and the smoldering car there and realizes what's taken place. "Oh my god." she whispers softly.
I love the play off your main characters name. This seems like it is going to be just as good or even better than my CSI shows I love to watch. Keep up the good work!
