Of all of the human needs beyond the basic survival needs of food and shelter, fulfillment is probably the most fundamental and satisfying. Finding meaning in what we choose to do in
our daily lives as well as over the duration of our entire lives gives us the richness of experience and the fertile ground in which to plant the seeds of the next step while still getting the most out of the present.
However, many people find it terribly difficult to find fulfillment, even in small measure. After all, where do we even start? It seems that frustration is everywhere—in personal opportunity and performance, unlocking our potential, money, relationships, spirituality, jobs, health or understanding life in
general. Not much seems to provide stable footing for a sense of potential growth toward something meaningful, and those hopes we do have turn out too often to be hollow. It’s as if we
are living in a dream in which nothing connects, we never reach the top of the stairs, we never find the right door, and the object of our affections always remains one step ahead of us.
The obvious—though incorrect—conclusion that most of us come to every day is that fulfillment is not for us, that
we have missed out, that we are not smart enough or educated enough or pretty enough or rich enough or holy enough or lucky enough. This conclusion stops us cold in our tracks and only isolates us further from the truth and the potential that lies behind it.
