Two weeks later, Jake lay prone atop his surfboard, bobbing fifty yards from shore.
The waves were perfect that morning, just begging to be carved into trails of white foam from the azure ridges which humped provocatively against him. It was the last chance he would have to surf for some time, he acknowledged bitterly; not because the waves wouldn't be there tomorrow, but because his board and wetsuit were headed for a local pawn shop. Rent was due days ago, and Mr. Silvera, the snotty bastard who landlorded over his shabby one bedroom apartment like some feudal throwback had rejected Jake's promise that he'd have the money soon.
Everything in cash by 5 or you're outta here had been the edict.
