Several years ago while attending a series of Christian meetings, this story was shared by a speaker one evening and has always been a favorite of mine. I love children but sometimes their brutal honesty and impromptu sayings often are like getting hit with a brick.
Two little girls aged eight or nine were having a little tea party and were sitting around a small table enjoying their cookies and tea. They were having such a grand time of playing make believe and their conversations were light hearted and they seemed to be having such a wonderful time. The little girl who was hostess poured her friend a fresh cup of tea when the friend abruptly commented,” Your mom is beautiful but she has very ugly hands." This comment hurt and after her friend had gone home the little girl ran into her mother’s arms crying and explained the reason for her tears. She asked her mommy, "Mommy, why are your hands so ugly."
The mother just pulled her close to her chest and kissed her on the forehead and looked directly into those teary blue eyes and explained. "Honey, when you were just a toddler learning how to walk, you got too close to the fireplace and your little dress caught fire. I burned my hands ripping your burning dress off; I didn't want you to get burnt. My hands were burned very badly and now I have these scars. My hands are not very pretty but every day I give thanks to God above that you did not get injured."
The little daughter reached for her mother's hands and ever so gently kissed them and said,” Mommy, I love you, thanks for ripping my dress off and your hands are not ugly to me."
