Lemon Oil
Lemon oil is known for having energetic properties. The older I got, it seemed as if my body wanted to often lay and rest. I drank coffee, but it did not seem to work as far as building my mood to want to get up and do different activities. I tried energy drinks, but the crash hours later was inevitable. I searched for natural energy on the web and came across lemon oil. In addition to helping with energy, I learned that it stimulates your senses and gives clarity to your thought process. Even the aroma itself is said to uplift your spirits.
In addition to these benefits, I learned that lemon oil has natural antibacterial properties, so I started using it as a cleanser. I normally add around 12-15 drops to my dishwater and soak my dishrag overnight in water in lemon oil. I even add it to my surface cleaners when I am wiping down counters in the bathroom and kitchen. It also does wonders for my laundry when I add about 6 drops to a damp face towel or a small cloth and put it in the dryer directly after a cleaning cycle. You can also add about 10-12 drops of lemon oil to your washing cycle as well in order to help sanitize and lift dirt from your clothes.
Once I found that lemon was also an astringent, I had to try it on my breakouts. I took a cotton ball, added three drops of lemon, and ran the cotton ball under warm water to dilute it. I applied it to my face in circular motions and the next morning most breakouts were gone and others were ready for the pulse to be squeezed. I know that sounds icky, but after a few weeks, my skin was glowing so much that I would be asked if I was pregnant.
There are other uses for this oil such as removing gum from the hair or on your carpet. It also is said to help grow nails and even diminish hair dandruff. I have not use it for these benefits as of yet, but I keep it on deck just in case.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil became one of my favorites. My first use of the oil was as an additive to vapor rub. My family and I unfortunately, have to deal with allergies and sinuses year round, but winter is the worse. By adding this to our vapor rub, it helped me along with my little ones with congestion and breathing. I rub it on the chest, back, and neck before bed. You can also rub it on the bottom of your feet and put on thick socks overnight. I recommend this remedy only when you are indoors.
Another one of my favorite uses of peppermint oil is in my hair shampoo and conditioners. I love, love, love the stimulation it gives my scalp. I can definitely testify to the fact it helped my hair grow faster and stronger. I also sometimes add rosemary oil to the mix, which is also a root stimulant for hair. I honestly do not feel I will ever eliminate these ingredients.
I have also used peppermint oil for my headaches and for cold cures. For the headaches, I put about three drops in the palm of my hand. I dilute it with water, enough to where the water runs a tad bit over the edge of my hand. I take my middle finger from the free hand and apply it on the left and right side of my temple. It is not a miracle cure but it does lessen the tension until the Tylenol works. I use peppermint oil for colds and flu symptoms. Similarly, to the way I relieve allergy symptoms, I rub the vapor rub mixture on the bottom of the feet and add socks before bed.
Peppermint oil can be use to repel insects. I tried to rub a little on my skin one time when I was outside doing gardening work to keep the mosquitoes away. It did not seem to work. You can also use peppermint oil as relief for sore muscles and aches.
Eucalyptus oil
Eucalyptus oil is definitely a cabinet keeper. I learned about eucalyptus oil as an air diffuser for the flu. A good friend of mine suggested that I use a warming humidifier and add anywhere from 10-12 drops of eucalyptus oil to help with stuffiness, cough, and congestion when I had gotten sick a few years back. I would like to think that the eucalyptus worked for me almost overnight since I woke up able to taste and smell from feeling stuffy the previous day. However, I also took medication the duration of the time I was sick, so it is safe to say it was a combination of the medicine finally kicking in my system and the usage of oil that helped to relieve those symptoms.
Eucalyptus is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. This means you are able to use it on your skin to help with swelling, eliminate germs, and reduce redness on cuts and burns. I would probably use it similarly to the way I used lemon oil for the face. I would place about three drops to a cotton swab, douse it in water, and lightly dabble it on the skin.
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is one of the first oils I became familiar with before getting into essentials oils. Before learning the different variations of essential oils and their properties, I assumed most oils were for skin, additives for cleaning products, and aroma scents. I always bought products that contained the enhanced lavender scent because of the calming smell. I was thrilled to find out that lavender also helps restlessness and anxiety. One of my old coworkers had a bad case of psoriasis and spent a pretty good amount of money to see a dermatologist every month. I later on discovered that he could have saved a lot of time and money by using lavender oil as a topical remedy for his psoriasis. I can only imagine how much money he could have saved.
Cinnamon Leaf Oil
Cinnamon leaf oil is at the top of my usage list. I am almost embarrassed to admit my initial reason for wanting to purchase cinnamon leaf oil, but it may help others. After having my second child, my romantic desire seemed to decrease. Although I was still very much in love with my husband, after working, taking care the kids, and completing household duties I just wanted to sleep.
I wanted something to boost my sexual mood, so I tried libido supplements that did not work. If anything, they made me feel moody and I had a bad experience with irregular vaginal spotting. I researched natural aphrodisiacs and came across cinnamon leaf oil. I mixed a few drops of the cinnamon leaf oil with lotion and rubbed it between my inner thighs and lower abdomen. It gave a warming sensation and perhaps that is what supposed to help stimulate the desire. The problem for me was that it did not stimulate me enough to overcome my sleepiness.
