His boss is Telford who rents the books. If the Book Collector can get them back in 24 hours he gets half the fee, a cool million bucks. The clock is ticking and the horrors await. "This is an easy one," said Telford, passing me a manila file card. "Guy named Bloomfield, runs a number of gambling joints. No trouble. Just pick up the book."
I looked at the title on the card. "The Book of the Black Sun".
"What's the fee? This is a goon job."
"One hundred thousand. Jimmy and Bruce are out-of-town. And they wouldn't appreciate your name for them."
"I guess." It wasn't enough money to get me my own month or two with the volume of choice. Those start at one million dollars. Still, I could use the cash for other things. And who knows? Maybe I could get an hour alone with my favorite book in the bargain. I still had calculations to check on solar eclipses well into the year 2860 AD.
"When do you want it back home?" Usually I could retrieve a book in twenty-four hours, and then I'd get double.
"Sorry. Like you said. A goon job. I'll expect you at breakfast."
I looked at the clock over the cash register. The timepiece was covered in dust like much of Telford's bookstore. Ten hours and change. Easy. I'd pick up the book, get a good eight hours read, then return it at seven. Easy. Right?
