Thunder seemed nervous, detached as if he sensed that something was wrong. Resting his hand on his weapon, Cole rode down the main street glancing from right to left at the bars, stores and private homes that seemed to be deserted. Absent were horses tied to hitching rails, people and animals. Usually when Cole had ridden into town after dark, the streets were well lighted, people would be going about their business and the two bars in town would be bustling with boisterous customers. The center of town consisted mostly of buildings where business was conducted. On each end of town and on the side streets, private homes occupied most of the area. South Fork was a growing community and boasted of over two hundred people. As Cole cautiously rode down the street on that dark night, he wondered where those two hundred people were. Where had they gone?
