Laurie Mitchell strolled sullenly up to Ben Coleman with an expression of horror on her beautiful face. Death was all around her. Only a few hours ago, most folks were concerned with making a living and surviving. Now, outlaws who wanted to find an easy way of making a living by taking from those who worked hard had murdered people she lived with every day. “I’m fine, I guess, Ben,” she said, almost stumbling on a rock. Ben grabbed her arm and steadied her until she regained her balance. Laurie felt dizziness and for a moment, worried about the darkness that was trying to close in on her. Taking a deep breath, sucking fresh air into her lungs, she let it all out and blinked her eyes attempting to make the dots dancing in front of her face go away. Wondering if the bullet that had creased her head had somehow done more damage than Doctor Claiborne thought, she struggled to keep her concerns to herself. Uncle Ben had enough worries. “I’ll be fine,” she repeated. “I’ve had just a little too much excitement for one day.”
