‘The hold was dark now, muted bulbs outlining crates and spars. She heard a litany of Russian and a voice confirming their entry into Egyptian air space in broken English. Through the porthole, only darkness below; then a wavering line of ivory that must be the coastline, followed by more darkness, seemingly endless.
Thirty minutes passed before she saw lights on the horizon, resolving into pulsars and corpuscles, towns and vehicles. Hydraulics engaged, turbines whined, her ears began aching and her stomach crept into her chest. She tightened the fraying seat-belt as the plane dipped towards the earth.
Somewhere down there, Nick had disappeared.
Somewhere she’d find him.
Somehow…’
