"There were days where the gentle whispering winds would softly
blow across the blue Mediterranean waters there in Joppa, the place where I was born. It’s a beautiful hilly city and it has an almost uninterrupted line of beaches and dunes. And it is the only natural
harbor between Mount Carmel and the Egyptian border. The white sands
from the sand dunes were captured in the hollows of the rocks and clinging
to the hillsides are a variety of homes.”
While Achsah was describing it to her friend, she felt as if she was still there taking in all its surroundings.
“Do you miss living in Joppa?” Naarah asked.
“Yes, I do,” as feelings of longing came over her. “I can remember
the beautiful open garden we had. You could see parts of the harbor from
there. The garden was lush with all sorts of colorful flowers and shrub. We
had a special place where we could sit and watch the ships go in and out of
the harbor. I’d go out to the garden and imagine that I was visiting lands of distant places and as a little girl dreamed of being a princess someday. My
brothers and I, we would play make-believe games there when we were
younger. We had so much fun. I would, also, go there and just think about
how my life would be as I grew older. But, we left so many friends there and
I do miss it. I sometimes wish,” taking a deep breath she continues, “I was still there. Now, most of my family is here in Jerusalem.”
