That was a man, look well
The fragments there, of flesh and bone,
From them can you tell me
Was this friend or foe?
Is there something in those ruins,
That says, I am a Christian, or a Jew,
Or a follower of the Great Mohammed?
Still less, do they say what sect
Of what religion they adhere to?
He died for his beliefs, thay say,
And will go straight to Heaven.
Damn all who preach such nonsense.
May they spend eternity
With mouldering bones and flesh,
and with the hate of those who heard,
And in their ignorance believed and acted.
Blame not these bones, now mixed forever,
With those of yet another friend or foe.
Blame rather those, whose Holy wars,
And endless, senseless vengeance,
Can make man kill a fellow man;
Who murder men and give God thanks.
