I was lucky enough to see an advance copy of the novel, Cost of Flight, before it even was put online for sale! (Thanks, Sofia!)
In Cost of Flight, Sophia has created a strange world where people have wings and those who have been unfortunately born without a pair are shunned. The situation may sound strange, but the world of the Gabrians, (as the winged people are called) is strangely mesmerizing, and you get hook from the first chapter. Though there is no magic, nor witches, nor spells, nor curses, after a few minutes with Cost of Flight you feel transported into a fantastical new world.
The heroine of Cost of Flight, the princess Sora, is an awkward young girl, with only one wing. Though she is spunky, she is also naive, and her adventures begin when some of the lies she has been told are erased by an older Gabrian named Ripley, who just wants to be left alone.
Not until about halfway through the book do we finally meet the true hero, (or villain, as it is never clear in Linne's mindblowing plot) the Count Torcheres, a foreigner and a revolutionary. He takes Sora on a journey that defies her conventions and beliefs, and soon, together they are working to change their world, one wing at a time.
Cost of Flight is creative, surprising, and fresh, with never a dull page. The prose flows like music at times, and the characters are so passionate and vivid, that they seem to be in the same room as the reader. Hold on tight though, for the end comes as you would never imagine...
I highly recommend this wild adventure, for it will truly blow your mind. Good job, Ms. Linne.
