Excerpt

Prologue:

Some people are meant to watch while some are prone to action.
Yet, there is a difference between watching and observing. What we learn and use from what we see is how everything is separated. Most people from elves, dwarves, even humans don’t realize is that they can be observed from what they don’t see. Is everyone assigned an observer?
Probably not, but those that affect the course of a world are very much so. Usually the honor is bestowed on ones that are deemed worthy enough.
Another speculation one can debate is that we all have our own book. We partake in a life and the chapters are the months of our lives. Each page day to day in a sense, going along as we write it. Is it already written for us? Or even bolder, is someone recording down what we do? Consider it a cosmic library, where one day we can open up the book and see how all lives were lived. Always ponder the things you do. What seems little and insignificant now may alter the course of existence thousands of ways.
In a place where most mortals will never reach, a man cloaked in lime green armor enters from the shadows. Sitting in the middle of the room is a long table with parchment and a feathered pen. Removing his helm and placing it on the table the man’s very long reddish ember hair fell loose.
He wasn’t so tall as he was stocky and built for his size. “I do not have much time,” he whispered.
Apparently he isn’t talking to anyone and doesn’t faze him.
“I will leave this for anyone who could come here.” Taking the pen and then dipping it in the oil or ink next to the parchment he started to scribble.
“I am known by many names. Over the years you are given nicknames and called by so many things. My given name as far as I can remember is Nikoliai.”
Looking over his shoulder and making sure his magical guards were in place Nikoliai went back to his writing.
“I was once an observer, but I could never stay that way for long. Neutral was never my thing and I doubt it ever will be.” By that admission he knew that others would be looking for him.
So far Nikoliai had managed to escape and evade anyone by moving from world to world. Not staying anywhere for too long but a life like this has taken its toll on him. Losing time with family and not having a steady life. Sacrifices have to be made though in order for peace to be had.
Nikoliai knew that an intense evil was coming and his own father had his chance but human nature stopped him. Nikoliai hoped to prevent that from happening again. Somehow he was linked to this beast. Once he found out who the new champion would be then he could act better on it.
Removing a pole-arm from behind his back and tied into his belt, he spun it in circles. This action renewed the magic that prevented anyone from spying on him. It would also act as a safety device incase Nikoliai was ever knocked unconscious and it would bring him to a safe point.
If anyone tried to follow they would be brought to one of his fake safe points and perhaps be trapped forever. “I do not know if I can die. That is both a blessing and huge curse.”
Loneliness was setting through him and he was weary. The observers he knew would only want to take him and erase them from his mind. So he could tell no one and accidentally change too much of the world. The evil just wanted him out of the way so another world could be destroyed.
Two sides to a coin and if either of them came up it would defeat him. Nikoliai had plenty of resources knew various magic, weapons, and forms of combat. Unless he stepped to directly where the observers were then he would have no problem with them. They were powerful but couldn’t interfere in what they watched. Knowledge like that was totally useful.
Not much shook him up anymore. From deaths of friends to losses of worlds he has visited or been on. Killing was second nature to him, on the other hand he didn’t do it unless he had too. Millions of ways there were to subdue your opponent. Not being prepared and not taking life seriously is what scared him.
Losing loved ones present or future for no reason he never wanted to face again. He knew of at least one last relative of blood relation to him. If this was the champion, as he feared it would be, then the future looked grim indeed. Truthfully he never should have come to this black hole of a library. Not that anyone would look for him here.
“I don’t want anyone not to know, and people to forget.” He carefully put the papers and hid things behind books and where the naked eye couldn’t see. Someone who was worthy would find all this one-day perhaps.
As Nikoliai was getting ready to leave out of instinct he began to wipe off his armor. Normally this shade of green would be horribly ugly, but it was shinier then a blacksmith could possibly ever get it to be. There was magic and lightness to the chainmail.
Yet, it did not give away his position and alert others to his presence. Hypnotic it could become if one were to continue to stare at it. Nikoliai sighed and shrugged, old habits even centuries haven’t cured of him. Dropping to a stance opposite of Indian style with his legs behind him, another habit of his, he rubbed his gloved hands across the floor panel.
Immediately a blue light emerged flowing upwards until it hit the ceiling. Falling forward into the light he felt it’s chill. All his other assignments and interfering on other worlds had been impartial up to this point. Now this current one would hit close to home.
Mistakes were easily made that way when emotion entered. Even magical armor can’t hide you from that. Letting it engulf him he disappeared with it completely. Sometimes lives cross each other’s paths, yet sometimes magic and portals do to.
This was one such case. How it would and will turn out. Some would say it is already decided and some say it is never too late. All of this is being watched even as the light completely fades in the library.
No one is left there to keep on the magical candles. All light, magic, and actions go somewhere. A place to be recorded and savored, but for what purpose? And who judges and what are the results of each action? For now another portal and world opens up.
