This is a historical novella about events in a 14th British colony in Florida in the 18th century.  In 1768 the British gained control of Florida from Spain.  They maintained control of Florida until 1778, when the territory was returned to Spain.

Andrew Turnbull, a wealthy British landowner hired 1,400 people from the Mediterrean area, mostly Minorcans, as indentured servants to work his fields in the British colony of New Smyrna in British East Florida (1768 -1778.)  He promised them their own plot of land, decent treatment, and freedom after a set period. Turnbull broke all his promises to the workers and enslaved them.  The Minorcans endured brutal conditions and over half died during the ten year period they were enslaved. 

This historical adventure-romance is the story of an orphaned teenager and his girlfriend who grow up under harsh slavery conditions, and who must  cope with hostile Indians, dangerous animals of the Florida wilderness, brutal slavemasters, and parents who disapprove of their romance.
