"The Walking Corpse." Three boys explore the basements of an old abandoned prison. Two of Wally's adventurous friends talk him into going down into the dank, pitch black network of old cells, storage rooms, and workshops of the old prison, in spite of rumors that a Haitian Voodoo practitioner once created zombies from the corpses of homeless people who died in the old prison.
"The Spirit of Drusilla." A witch is put to death in the 18th century and revives in the 21st century. But she is only a spirit, and needs to find a body to possess. She finds it in a young girl hiking in the woods.
"Sanctuary." A waitress on the way home late at night from her job at a truckstop almost hits an animal and runs off the road into a ditch, where she gets stuck. A storm brews, and she runs to find shelter in an old abandoned house on the side of the country road. But the house is not empty...an evil being lives there.
"Sleepwalker." A young woman awakens while sleepwalking to find that she is walking past a graveyard. She begins to suspect that she was drawn here under a hypnotic spell. A tall man in black keeps flashing in her mind.
"Do Not Disturb." A teen plans to be an archeologist, and talks his younger brother into going with him to an old deserted settlement in the woods to look for artifacts. What they find buried there is the stuff of nightmares.
"The Hands of Fate." Two men, who have a history of extreme cruelty to animals, go on a fishing trip. The spirits of all the animals that have suffered their cruelty find the men and have their revenge. A third man, who is merely a friend of the two, is caught up in the in the animals anger and vengeance. He must depend on the mercy of the enraged animal spirits to spare him from their terrible punishment.
"Werewolf of Misty Valley." Peggy Vasko and her husband recently moved into a beautiful old house in the mountains that he inherited from his uncle. The locals believe that a werewolf roams this part of the mountains. She has good reason to suspect that her husband was bitten by the creature and is himself becoming a werewolf.
"The Dweller in Big Misty." Pete, a teenager from Baltimore visits his cousin in Florida. While the two boys are on a camping trip, Pete gets separated from his cousin, gets lost, and wanders into a huge swamp. In addition to the danger of gators and snakes, Pete finds himself unwittingly the victim of an ancient Seminole curse, and is stalked by a hideous supernatural creature.
"Curse of the Voodoo Man." Tom has a few drinks too many and heckles the nightclub magician known as "Dan the Voodoo Man." He laughs when the magician places a curse on him, but in the following days strange things start happening to Tom.
"Ghost of a Psycho." A couple buying a house scoff when warned that the house is haunted. Greg is assigned the night shift in his new job, and Ginger must spend the first night alone in the house. Eerie things start happening after midnight.
"The Ghost in the Beach House." A deserted old beach house is said to be haunted. Two young boys beg their uncle, who lives near the beach house, to take them to see a real haunted house. Most haunted houses are empty, but with a creepy atmosphere. This one has a real ghost, and it is evil.
Excerpt
From "The Walking Corpse"
They reached the room at the bottom of the stairs, and the beam of Mark's light picked up several rusted pieces of machinery scattered on the floor.
They went through a short tunnel and entered an empty chamber about the size of a large living room. It was cool and dank down below, and Wally noted that there was no smell of urine in the basement as there was above, although the musty odor remained. They proceeded through two more tunnels and a couple of more chambers, being careful to stay in a straight line. They avoided the side doors to prevent getting lost in the maze.
The chambers were all empty except for more machine parts on the floor. Wally's heart would jump into his throat every time they entered a new chamber, always expecting some horrible creature to jump out from the shadows.
The seventh chamber wasn't empty. Resting on a large table next to the wall was a long box.
"Hey, th-that looks like a coffin," said Randy. His voice was at a high pitch and was shaky.
"Don't sweat it, man," said Mark." The prisoners made a lot of stuff here, including coffins. Prisoners die and get buried too, y'know."
The three approached the coffin. By now, all had their flashlights on with the beams trained on the object. When they were close enough for the lights to shine into the coffin, the three gasped in unison. Randy had been about to light up a cigarette, and the Zippo lighter slipped from his fingers and clanged when it hit the concrete floor. Wally felt faint as he beheld the thing in the coffin.
There it lay, a gaunt form, wasted to a near skeleton, its sickly liver-colored, wrinkly skin drawn tightly around its bones. Stringy hair covered its skull, and the opened eyes of its hideous face stared blankly at the ceiling. Its clothing was filthy, tattered, and blood stained.
The expression on its face was vicious, even in death, and its thin lips were parted in an evil grin, showing yellow teeth. Around its mouth was dried blood and bits of flesh. Randy was paralyzed. He stood there like a statue, rigid and mute, not daring to breathe. But even as he stared at the thing, he recoiled in horror as its eyes moved.
It raised its head and a guttural, raspy sound issued from its throat.
Mark and Randy screamed and fled through the tunnel connecting to the next chamber, but when Wally recovered from his paralysis and turned to run, his foot caught on an old metal part on the floor and he fell. His flashlight slipped from his grasp and rolled away, the light now extinguished.
He heard the guttural sound coming from the thing again, and then heard scuffling sounds. It was getting out of the coffin!
