In ancient Hawaii, jewelry played an important role and was used as a way to designate the tribe, nobility, marital status, class, and age. Ancient Hawaiians created jewelry from objects they found, such as seashells, coral, teeth, hair, bone, feathers, and whale ivory.

The history of Hawaiian jewelry is as rich as the jewelry itself. Before Hawaii became part of the United States, kings and queens ruled Hawaii. These kings and queens developed a cordial relationship with England. Notably, King David Kalakaua (the “Merrie Monarch”) received a beautiful bracelet for his sister, the Princess Liliuokalani in the year 1880 from Queen Victoria. The bracelet was stunning and engraved with black enameled lettering. Princess Liliuokalani was so infatuated with her gift she wore it every day for the rest of her life.

Reviews for "Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry"

Reviewed by Marcia Miller-Twiford 6/6/2010
I was lucky enough to live in Hawaii for three years. During those years I was given Hawaiian Heritage jewelry as special gifts from my son and my husband. Today's Heritage jewelry is made from gold. Some have lettering, some don't. I treasure my collection and wear three of the bracelets every day. Most days you have to stand in line to get waited on at the Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry store in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. One of my braclets has the black lettering spelling my name in Hawaiian.
