Anger is a wind which blows out the lamp of the mind.
~ Robert G Ingersoll
Although there are many among us who acknowledge their anger, that in itself, is not enough to put this difficult emotion into perspective. Identifying and facing up to our underground reservoirs of resentment and rage are the keys to moving beyond them to forgiveness.
Untold amounts of energy, effort and money can be wasted as long as one allows underlying, undetected anger to swim around under the surface. It toxifies everything it touches, masquerades behind a dozen different masks, and halts progress on every front. Merely confronting anger is not enough. Those, who have followed this path, are angrier now than when they started. Unfortunately, they did not understand that they only completed half of the fundamentally spiritual journey that leads beyond anger to forgiveness.
Forgiveness is not a gift we give to others, but instead, one we give to ourselves. Forgiveness begins with an act of will, the decision to be a victor other than a victim. Healing is a different proposition. It is the experience of finding, and holding onto something that is missing from within our deepest selves. Healing requires that we treat the cause of our pain rather than simply put on a bandage to protect us from further harm. Healing means not trying to turn away from, nor erase the past, but in a real way breaking its power, by controlling our present emotions and responses. Relief and healing are two different realities.
