Trail of Broken Chains is an exciting story that follows the journey of Robert Flint, the 3rd. and Joshua Wells, two adventurous young men, through the ever-changing American landscape in the years immedediately following the American Revolution. After meeting Lily, the daughter of a wealthy southern gentleman, and Adam, a former slave whom Lily and her father had saved from a vicious landowner. Robert and Joshua's eyes are opened to the struggles of their fellow human beings enslaved on the southern plantations. With a steadfast sense of justice, Robert, Joshua, Lily, and Adam devise a plan to liberate the slaves in the south, and transport them to freedom in the north. They soon learn that the slave trade is a big business down south, and danger lies at every turn in the road. How much are these determined young people willing to risk in order to change the course of American history?
Joshua, Halfmoon, and I trekked through the mud toward the rise of the hill. When we got to the top we looked down. The narrow crossing we had to pass was completely under water.
"Damn it!" Joshua yelled. "I knew this would happen. It'll be at least another day before we can get across that river."
"You sure as hell can say that again." I replied. "it is really pounding through there."
Halfmoon took off down the bank and started downstream, barking like hell. Joshua and I knew something was wrong. We half slid down the muddy road and near the bank of the roaring river. There we saw what was left of a wagon. It was all busted up and half under water, caught on a large tree that was ripped from its roots into the river.Halfmoon had found something or somebody. We maneuvered our way toward him, and there hanging from a tree limb was a young woman and a Negro man trying to hang onto her so the river wouldn't take her away. We grabbed hold of the woman and then the young Negro and pulled them to saftey onto shore.

Once again, the author drew me into the story right away. These characters are every bit as charismatic as their grandfathers. Through the course of their adventure they meet many other people and one wolf.
There was no "sophomore slump" for the author. His writing has matured since his first book, the characters are more richly develpoed and the plots more involved.
David has left me eagerly looking forward to his third book, and I quarantee I will not wait to buy it this time.
