Some people say that this is a chicken and egg issue. Throughout my early life and career, I was constantly bombarded by this thought as I looked at my subordinates, peers, superiors, friends and mentors. I have always thought that leaders were born and that it was their characteristics that were pivotal in their decisionmaking process. However, it was only later on in my life that I concluded that it was the environment and culture that would further mould their innate characters into the final product that we all see.
As such, I have coined a few characteristics on what an ideal leader should possess.
I will start each chapter with a story distinctive to each characteristic, and then share with you the formula that I have come up with to define each characteristic. And as you read the stories and the individual characteristics, you might be able to spot the interconnectivity of one characteristic with the others because in reality, many character traits are indeed interlinked.
In addition, at the end of each chapter, I will reinforce the concepts, get you to analyse them and see how you can apply them. Hence, whether you are a student leader, business owner, manager or leader in any organisation, I hope that you’ll be able to relate to these incidents and stories, and ask yourself what you would do in such situations.
